A TM28 is fine. Jet it right and you should get a slight difference.

and a slide type carb will give you more flow than the CV anyday, if outright performance is the motive. you should do individual speed tests before and after to get a clearer picture

Just a thought Atul. In every carb, unlimately the venturi size is what matters. A Karizma has a 30mm venturi and in fact flows better than a 28mm carb at WOT. Having said that, a TM28 has its own benefits over the CV. A slide opens even with the slighest input, but a CV slide would have a response lag and has to pass via a secondary butter fly value to exit into the port. So effectively the restriction is completely eliminated in a flattie.
A CV carb is super for street riding, but not a god bet for all-out racing.
To get better results from a slide carb, see if you can get a 30mm slide carb. Will work better than the 28.

you you really think there are any gains to had unless the stock exhaust is removed?

Only if its a good tuned pipe.

how about a full stainless steel pipe with tuned length and headers..maybe something like this we made for the pulsar

                WOT the f***

                @joel
                Couldn't find a 30mm flattie (I like that term )

                Okay. Did the following -

Dropped needle to second leanest from second richest. Its a regular 5-step thing.

                Left same 165 mains

Tuned air screw. Didn't touch pilot jet.

got the bike serviced with new synthetic oil and got tappets set.

The initial jerking has totally gone. There is no lag and it shoots. Now the problem is getting to the finer details. On constant high rpm (about 8000), the bike makes power waves, like the fuel is coming in intermissions. But then those rpms won't be sustained for too long in practice. The other more real problem is that the ignition timing (at WOT) still creates issues at lower throttle openings. The bike makes pinging noises, sounds to me very much like after-burn in the exhaust. Is that because the fuel is too rich and all is not burnt? It mostly happens when I suddenly shut the throttle from higher rpms.

I know its easy to read the above and scream 165=Rich, but at WOT it sounds sweet, stoich and fast. So am not so sure about fiddling with that that. It accelerates without any 'brickwall'. more like a gradual fade that comes very very late.

                Comments?

your needle clip just determines the jetting between throttle openings..once you go WOT, your needle setting doest matter, your main jet does

i still think 160 is rich. try a 140, or better even, a 1.2mm driller mikuni hex jet

Exactly why I played with the needle, since the WOT performance is good.

Exactly why I am hesitating to touch the main jet. Again, the problem is not there in WOT.

                      go leaner on the clip

and again..wont be a bad move to just check on a leaner jet..you can always revert back if it doesn't work out

                      cheers

Atul, what were the parameters considered while you built the pipe? Do you have the engine specs? Cam timing especially!
