  • Chain cleaning and lube

    Hi all,

I am confused about how should I clean my chain and lube it?

I have seen videos and read articles about it. Some are saying to use Motul cleaner with Motul lube while some advice for using Kerosene oil for cleaning along with Motul lube.

Bro just keep it simple, use kerosene oil for cleaning, and h90 gearoil for lubing.it will keep your chain in good condition.check your chain when its is dry.and do the needful.

For cleaning, go with kerosene/diesel/WD40 whatever you prefer from these.

Spray it onto the whole chain and let it work for 3-5 mins. Then use a chain cleaning brush and work the whole chain, you can use normal toothbrush but it requires double work. Then use a clean rag or cloth to clean the whole chain. Leave for 10-15 minutes.

The you need to lubricate, there are multiple ways to do it - chain spray/75w90 or 90 gear oil/grease. Personally if prefer grease, as it lasts 3-4 weeks in my usage, while oil lasts 3-4 days amd week at best. Fellow rider has done 2300 kms Bangalore to Mumbai directly on grease lubricated chain of R3. Also, grease protects chain from water/dust and prevents rusting.

For greasing, get one from heavy vehicle spares store, whatever brand you get it'll cost 300-400 for one kg pack. Just ask them for truck wheel bearing Grease. It's reddish color waxy look. Apply it using toothbrush working all sides so that there's a thin film all around. Then ride for 15-20 mins, this heats up the chain so it goes inside the chain cavities. Then reapply another thing coat and you're all set for a long trip or a whole month of commute.

To be honest, I was myself dubious about using grease. But, after using it 2 times, I know now that I wasted many years using chain oil.

How about using terpant oil or Isopropyl alcohol for cleaning chain?
