  • RE Classic, Buzzing / Humming / Whining sound

    Hi everyone,

I have done quite some searching in the forum but didn't really find something relevant, so here is my problem:

I can here some kind of humming or whining noise when I am riding my Enfield Classic 350 (BS4). It sounds a bit like an electro-motor or a car driven in reverse. The sound starts around 40kmh in 3rd gear and gets less noticeable whit further increasing the speed. It is only while accelerating and decelerating, probably most noticeable while decelerating. When pulling the clutch it is gone, so I think it can not be the disk brake or the tires.

The problem started after around 1000km. I thought it might go away on its own and is related to braking in. But now after 8000km it is still there and has even increased, I think.

I have done a lot of research, some people stated it can be normal. But I don't believe that. I also mentioned it during each servicing and either the mechanics couldn't even notice the sound or they told it would be solved with tightening the drive chain or cleaning the drive chain.

I actually think it is more likely to be related to the clutch or to the primary chain or the gear box. Sometimes, I also face difficulties to get back to neutral from second gear... But I don't know if it is related.

Tappet noise is another problem I face, I mention it in case it could be related.

Does anyone her know what reason could be behind that sound? And is it harmful to the motor?

    Thanks!

Which engine oil do you use. I faced this issue on my FZ S V2 before 4 years back I guess. I changed engine oil. I am using MOTUL 7100 10w 50 since 4 years. It solved my issue. Check your wheel bearings and also for any loose bolts since Royal Enfield have lot of vibrations. Let me know if it solves your problem.

Thanks for your input! Yes, I could try out a fully synthetic oil... Once the lockdown is over. That would be great, if I could solve the issue that simple.
        Best,
        Flo
