  • Opinion on R15 V1 Engine life

    Hi,

Hope you guys are doing well in these tough times.

I own a R15 V1 of 2011 model. I am the 2nd owner of it. I got it in mid 2015, when I bought it it was in very good condition if not excellent. It had done only 20k kms. Currently reading 65+k kms so around 45k in 5 years.

As it was my 1st two wheeler, I was very thrilled and in the initial years (for around 3 years) I used to do pretty aggressive down shifts and upshifts after only 9k + rpm most of the time.

I used to get regular servicing usually after every 3k kms, but never got a good service at the so called authorised Yamaha service centers, one of which is in my hometown Hassan (worst of all). Never really got the issues solved.

Except for Scarlet Yamaha at Mysore (somewhat satisfied with their service). As I was in Bangalore most part of the year I couldn't go to Mysore for every service. I tried several service center in Bangalore, again not satisfied with their service too, then on one of my friend's recommendation I got serviced at a local mechanic for couple of times and the issues got worse

    1. Gear shift issue(hard shifts)

    2. Mild engine noise and vibration

Again switched to authorised service centre. In the recent months I got massive engine vibrations. Yamaha service guy at Bangalore wheels said that the engine bore is weak and hard shifts is because of the worn out clutch bell. He quoted around 12.5k for bore kit replacement and around 4k for clutch bell replacement.

    So, I thought of having second opinion at Mysore. There the supervisor took my bike for a ride and said, If the bore is weak, there are 2 scenarios;

    1. There will be huge lag in pickup

    2. You will get smoke out of exhaust

In my case, none of those apply

He said me it may be an issue with the balancer which is attached to the piston chamber which is causing massive vibrations and hard gear shifts maybe because of spring in the gear shaft

He quoted around 6.5 k for balancer replacement even though the balancer is cheap it requires to replace many engine components when it's opened
And around 2k for gear issues.

So my questions regarding this are

    1. What do you think the real issue is? (Mysore guy's opinion or Bangalore guy's opinion)

    2. Is 65k is all the life to get out of an R15 (considering 9 years life and pretty aggressive riding style in the mid 2 to 3 years)?

    3. Which is the best option for me to get services(Bangalore or Mysore) ?considering I live in Bangalore and Mysore is 150 km far and I am really nervous to opt Bangalore (really confused about this)

    4. Will the performance be same as before, after replacing the bore?

    Thanks in advance,,,

Get your foundation nuts and bolts retorqued(engine bolts and nuts attached to the frame) ,Switch to fully synthetic engine oil 15w50 grade (motul, liqui moly, shell of your choice),and get your fiber parts also checked, some rubber washers ,panel rubbers, might need replacement, worn tires, bent rims ,loose body panels, there are many causes for vibrations,do you feel any pickup issues?if clutch bell bushes are worn, when you press the lever, you'll have less sound from the clutch side area, when you release it'll be all the same

        Hi Tush11,

        Thanks for the input,

I do use fully synthetic from Yamalube(they say so. Not sure it's fully synthetic). I did use shell fully synthetic few times but I didn't feel the engine is taking so well.

Fiber parts and panels are fitted well, tyres are good but I did had rim bend 3 years ago but lathe work is done on that.

I do feel pickup a little low compared to what I used to get in the initial years of my ownership. But it's very less diff.

But I do know that the vibration is from the engine because it's massive and it's very noticeable and the feel of it is huge

I didn't understand ur question on clutch.
If u are asking the sound coming from the clutch base compartment
Yes there is a difference If I can put it right, when press and hold the clutch lever it's like normal bass and if I release the clutch it's deep bass(both observation are when the engine is on idle/neutral)
        Just

        Stay safe

is it possible for you to record a video and publish here?if the bike has not been used and is left standing, generally oil will drop the sump, the clucth plates and the head will run dry, first start is very important ,let it idle after a long start for three to five minutes, get your clutch plates (fiber and steel)checked, and your clutch bell, check the colour of the spark by opening the spark plug cap,its has to be blue.
