  • Royal enfield Clutch and Gear not in sync

    Hello Everyone,

I have Royal Enfield Thunderbird and for the last few days I have been having an issue with my motorcycle. The clutch wire looks fine and have a proper tension too while pressing it. But it looks like the gears are working independently of the clutch. There is no effect of pulling a clutch when motorcycle is in gear. I noticed this by putting my motorcycle on center stand. And if I try to engage the gear WITHOUT CENTER STAND then there is jerk like I have not pressed the clutch and the motorcycle stops.

Please tell me how is it possible if my clutch wire is fine.

    Thanks in advance.

Check clutch cable routing,if the clutch cable
is sticking then also it can be a problem.

Move the vehicle in gear without starting it. Clutch is engaged in your vehicle. When you move to and fro, the clutch disengages. I hope this helps.

Thanks Niranjan for the suggestion. But did not worked. I moved the bike and even changed the gears. But gears doesnt get disengaged on pressing the clutch. No effect of pressing clutch. Loosen the bolts of the clutch at the bottom too..

Seems like your plates are welded due to heat or abuse.
Usually all bikes do have a certain amount of clutch drag which causes the wheels to rotates when parked at stand with lever pulled in.
Some cork friction plates initially stick together with metal plates. But once plates get disengaged it will be working fine.
Try placing the bike in centre stand, throw 1st gear in, holding the clutch. Then hold the rear brake. The rear wheel must halt.
Else it's the plates which got welded due to heat or abuse. Times it may be a defective from factory even.

            Thanks and regards

Thanks manoj for pointing on that spot. It looks like the plates are welded together due to may be heat or unused during the lockdown. I tried your suggestions too and while applying the brakes bike engine got off with jerks. I talked to a local mechanic they told me the same reason and told me to kick for several times pressing the clutch but keeping the bike off.
But that too didnt worked for me. I dint have a mechanic near by so its really getting tough to take my bike to a mechanic.
Please tell me is there any other way of sorting these welded clutch plates

Drain oil, Remove the clutch casing, then inspect the clutch cam, clutch actuator pin and release bearing.
Then remove the clutch pack and inspect plates.
If needed buy new plate (both friction and metal plates).
Use new engine oil and soak all friction plates upto 4 hrs.
Then reassemble back the same way you disassembled.

Tons of YouTube videos are available with step by step instructions.
                It will be helpful

Definitely one can skill up themselves in the quarantine.
I strongly believe DIY is the best way to treat our bikes.

                Thanks and regards
