  • [Help] FZ-S Speedometer backlight auto turn on issue

    Hello everyone,
I have an Fz-s v1(2015 Carb. Model). I am facing a strange issue with the speedometer, sometimes when i apply front or rear brake the speedometer backlight turn on and goes off on releasing the brake.

Things that i have done so far :

    1. Changed the rear bulb as one spare parts dealer had suggested me that your rear bulb might be short that is causing this issue. But during replacing the bulb i found that my rear bulb is perfectly fine.

    2. Checked both front/rear brake light switch wiring/connectors, tail light wiring/connectors and speedometer wiring/connector.

    3. Changed front brake light switch as old one was not working. Don't know when it went kaput.

    4. Checked the speedometer pcb because i had repaired it earlier.

    Thanks in Advance,
    anshul

UPDATE : Whenever i turn on ignition, speedometer first shows broken letter(speed) and then it does POST.
And seocond, the speedometer backlight sometimes lit up even when turning the handle.

From your problem description, it seems to me like some wire(s) related to the digital instrument console in the wiring harness is (are) damaged and is (are) may be getting electrical short, thus causing the broken letters on the digital panel. Do get it checked and a good mechanic should be able to fix it for you.

If the harness is beyond fixing condition, you might have to replace it with a new one altogether but let us not get ahead of ourselves until you have it checked first.

          thanks for your reply bro,

I don't trust any SVC or FNG mechanics nearby my location because for them every problem has one solution that is "change whole assembly". In simple, either they don't know or don't want to diagnose the root cause of the problem. They work on hit and trial method , you are a money making machine for them.

That's why i have checked the wiring harness myself and cleaned all the connectors. Wiring harness is absolutely fine with no visible crack/damage from outside and connectors are also fine. Checked battery and regulator rectifier both are working fine.

Now after doing all this, the speedometer backlight issue has gone but broken letter issue before POST is still there and sadly, a new issue has arrived which is "Erratic speedo reading". Speedometer is not showing 1,2,4,7 digit during acceleration/de-acclearation.It starts from 3 then goes to 5,6 ,8 and after that it works normally.

Could it be due to a faulty speed sensor? is it possible that wires in the wiring harness is broken from inside without any visible crack?

Can you suggest me a guide/tutorial to do continuity testing on wiring harness.

          Thanks again

            No problem

I understand why you don't trust those service centre guys and I don't trust most of them either.

As you have rightly guessed, there may be a broken wire in the harness, from the inside. One of my friends had to change his FZ1's wiring harness because lot of wires were damaged overtime and some of them were broken from the inside and were not visible, causing all sorts of problems. It was a nightmare trying to get it fixed.

So yes, that issue you said is fixed now, might resurface some day but hopefully it does not.

As for the malfunctioning speedo, it is hard to point out a finger on what is causing the issue. It is possible that one of the IC's may be failing or has failed, or it could be some other circuitry related issue.

The only easy way to know if it is a fault with the speedo or if the wiring needs to be changed is by connecting a new or a used speedo which you know is working well and try to reproduce the issue. If it is the wiring issue, you should be able to reproduce the problem.

Although I have never done it myself, I read that to test a wiring harness's connectivity, one needs to know how to use a multimeter. The procedure to do it is, while touching the negative lead (usually black colored wire) to the vehicle's bare metal surface, touch the positive (usually red colored wire) to the wires in the harness that you wish to test. Once ready, turn on the ignition.

You should get a reading on the Multimeter between 11 - 13.5 volts (motorcycle electricals generally work on 12 V DC).

            Good luck!
