  • [Photo Feature]: Tyre Pressure in Royal Enfield Classic

Hey bikers, I’ve noticed an issue in RE C500, the mileage of bike is varying drastically if tyre pressure is not appropriate(low) in many of my rides, i’ve noticed that mileage falls below 30 even closer to 25-27 if the tyre pressure is dropped below 28 PSI in rear and below 22 PSI at front.(Riding tank-full to next tank-full) and the mileage again rises to 35+ if appropriate tyre pressure is maintained throughout the fuel cycle.

Can somebody tell me, is it normal correlation between tyre pressure and mileage or there are some other forces at play, maybe some issue with injector or throttle.

Any sort of discussion, guidance is much appreciated.

      tyre pressure

unless such differences are found when the appropriate pressure is maintained.

While your observation certainly has merit how often did you have pillion when the tyre pressure was running low. This is an important aspect. RE C 500 is a heavy motorcycle and low tyre pressure would increase the rolling resistance thereby reducing FE. Having a pillion on in addition would add another 60 kg laden weight to the bike. Did you change your exhaust and at what stage of the servicing cycle did your fuel cycle coincide....

Ideally you must never allow the tyre pressure to come so far below the recommended values because it negatively impacts your tyre life, vehicle stability and braking performance. It is unsafe to do so. Here is one recommended process for checking FE with accurate results. I am sure you would be aware of most of these aspects...

Get your vehicle serviced and ensure that fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs and fuel pump are checked thoroughly. Preferably have your fuel tank emptied and washed through to remove all traces of rust or foreign contaminants. This would remove any water particles that tend to get into the tank. RE is notorious for poor sealing of the fuel filler cap. Also it would be better if the engine oil is also changed during this service for getting the best results.

        1. Keep tyre pressure religiously at a chosen value for the front and rear wheels. Depending on the state of tyres you would have to get the pressure checked weekly.
        2. Choose a trustworthy petrol pump in your vicinity and make sure you top up exactly to the same level preferably from the same nozzle each time. In this regard ask the autowalas where they go for fuelling up. Their advise can never be wrong.
        3. During the trial period do not let anyone else drive the bike. Also keep a track of how often you have a pillion.
        4. For best results go for a long drive where you drive about 300 km at a stretch.

        Note down results.

This should give you very accurate results for any chosen pressure value as it would eliminate a large number of variables.

        Hope this helps.

        Ride hard stay safe.
