As far as i know the most probable reason in a NOT VERY OLD bike can be that the clutch has gone loose. OR there might be a chain lag. None of these is a serious problem. You can set it right yourself or a mechanic will charge around 10 or 20 bugs.
If both of these are fine then check for the sprockets. Replacing the damaged sprocket can set this problem. By chance if it doesn't work then replace the chain also. And if there is no problem with the sprockets, either the clutch plate is worn out or there is a problem with the gear rods(a cut in teeth or something). In this case replacing the gear rod is a must. But chances of gear rod getting screwed is very low as rtr cannot be that old.

Its a better idea to shift gears as per RPM than speed. Generally shifting just before the red line(on the RPM meter) gives maximum power.rtr gives max power at 8500 RPM. So shifting gears as soon as the needle CROSSES 8.5 on RPM meter would be perfect for some power packed riding.
