  • Engine overhaul or replacement?

Hey do u see the avenger in my avatar? That's my friend's avvy. The thing is that he bought it from someone and although the bike was cleared by all the mechanics before purchase, it gave him tonnes of problems, including getting the piston assembly changed and the induction coil as well. Poor guy, he has spent almost 20k on its maintenance in three months. It seemed impeccable for a second hand bike but later on it troubled him a lot.

Since he's not on xbhp, he asked me to post this query that will an overhaul get his bike in shape or will a replacement of parts be required?

    Query Approved.

      Ron,

Our divining skills are currently AWOL and we are divining them.

Till then, for the xmen's benefit, why not list all the symptoms so that some pertinent replies are received - not just empathetic words!

Actually i made the first post from the office, so i wasnt able to type much.

ok so some of the things are:
1.The engine oil used to get burnt. Got it checked and ultimately had to get the piston changed. Since then the bike doesn't have a good pickup.

          2. Once the induction coil and the magnets broke and the bike didnt start at all. Although the coil was changed, the section produces a noise as if something is being ground inside.

          3. He needs to get the clutch plates replaced often. Like i had got my clutch plates replaced @ 30k and my odo reads 40k, and we had got them changed at the same time. and since then he has got his plates changed twice, not on his own will but on being adviced by the mechanic @ castrol bike zone, wazirpur.

          4. When he starts the bike using self, it produces a sharp screeching sound for a fraction of a second.

So these are some of the things he told me. Pardon me for not using technical terms.. coz i myself dont know them!

Although even i am not sure how these things are associated, but any help would be appreciated.

            1. In four stroke engine, oil will always burn and will be less after some usage, so within how many kms oil is getting burn?

            2. Check the gap between magnet and stator plate. The sound is scratchy..umm that means it is not fixed properly so refit the unit.

            3. When he replace the oil or pour the oil check for this grade >> API(JASO MA or MA2) 20W40, if the bike is 200cc then if I am not wrong then the grade is 20W50 but make sure it has MA2 series. MA/MA2 series- it is guaranteed that clutch will not slip. (If he has slippage problem). If not then check for clutch spring height. Generally in mechanics language clutch plate means the plates which has got lining material. But it's not. Clutch plate means > steel doted plates, friction plate (in mechanic language clutch plates) and last which is with springs is pressure plate. The plates should be changed with springs and steel plate. Because all the 3 spares are depending on each other. But I still need some more details.

            4. Check the starter clutch system. Check the placement of starter and other spares.

Point one, change your mechanic, you will find huge changes in your bike, look for another 'good' mechanic in your area.

hey thanks for replying guys...i'll see if this info proves useful for him..

i told the fool not to buy a second hand bike! he wanted to save money.. the amount of money he has spent on getting the bike repaired plus the cost of the bike is more than the cost of a new avvy!
