  • Modding Pulsar 150

Guys, i am a new member here, loads of information and a great website to start with.

I have a Pulsar 2003-04 UG2 model, since i have shifted in Blore I picked it up a few month ago second hand from a friend. It had 46k+ on the odo, did a neat 8kms+ with a total of two services. I want to mod the bike a bit...and try keeping things at as stock as possible. Its the analogue speedo and so far I have done around 110+ both single and double on it.

    1. Need a really good engine oil recommendation for this bike, used the Castrol 300 bucks one which lasted me around 2.5k kms, the service guys put the regular castrol 210/- oil which lasted 2500 kms, recently i am using shell which seems only after 1.6k engine is sounding a bit harsh. Which engine oil would suit best? With shell the topend kind of sufferred and now it takes time to cross the 100 mark quite a bit.

    2. Front tyre is zapper 2.75-18 and back is 3.0-18 mrf nylongrip, want to change the tyres specially back one as its kinda thin, though the grips are new which tyre would give be a good combination of grip (wet/dry), balance and looks.Would like to invest behind the best available here. Tubeless? Reliability? The present tyre set is actually running quite fine and reliable! but back tyre slips on harsh braking quite often even though the grip set is quite a bit in it..

    3. Is it advisable to change the spoke wheels and go for the newer mags? The service guys told me the spoke ones were much *resistant*.

    4. I have already changed brake shoes, disc pads, fitted a 200's handle bar for better handling, how about changing the sprocket? Shall i stick to what i have or i have some other options here?

    5. Need more light! Avengers coil and the lamp mod seems good to go?

    6. How about any cosmetic upgrades? like some good RMV recommendations and? Is it possible or anyone has done a mod that will modify the P150's front light assembly to something like the R15? But cosmetic upgrade should limit itself to only lights, dont like the idea of adding more weight!

    7. What else can be done to improve performance, the rev seems smooth all the way till 8 then it goes a bit harsh, when the engine oil is old its around 7 then harsh, how to work around these? I dont want to do any upjetting.

    8. Abs in front Disc? Recommendations for back Disc? Or its simply a waste?

    9. Where do i get good riding gear in blore, specially jackets and gloves Not the uber-expensive ones though.

Pics if needed would be coming! Thanks for all the reading.

      Hi Ang,
      Welcome to XBHP.
quoting that u wanted most of ur mods to be more of stock, here are my suggestions.

      1. If ur used to castrol products, then try the castrol power1 for a change.
Although, there are many other options of semi-synth and fully synth oils available ( like Motul, Veedol, Valvo). That depends on ur grade and budget

      2. Tyres i'm not very sure.

      3. Why do u wanna change the spokes? there's nothing like sitting for hours together polishing every single spoke

      4. Change the sprocket only if it is worn out. But if u want a power increase/top end increase then go for it. But remember you will either have to sacrifice the top end or the initial acceleration, depending on what size front and rear sprocket u use. ( there is a thread running for this)

      5. Go for it. ( does ur bike have the round dome? the pulsar classic?) I'm not really sure if this mod is possible on ur model of the pulsar, but if it is possible, go for it. Fox the OSram Night breakers preferrably ( not the Philips crystal vision).

      6. If ur pulsar is the one with the round dome( classic), Just leave it. They look killer. Macho man kinda looks.

      7. What kind of performance ru looking for? If it is good performance, just check ur clutchplates (rather the whole clutch kit), change to good spark plugs. somebody correct me if i gave him wrong advice on this

      8. ABS?? why not?? Its available in India for bikes. It is not a waste. It is a hard core safety modification. check www.saferideabs.com for entire details ( it costs only 1250/- bucks). Rear Disc - chuck the idea. waste of money for UR bike.

      9. Let me know when u find a place. I am not sure. Try on JC road. U should find some place.

Hope I answered to a certain extent. I am gonna use this thread for my personal learning now because it has so many questions in one.

Post pics when u start ur mods... Happy riding brother.

I want to put up the best, budget does not matter much, if i am getting 4~5k+ with a 800 bucks oil, I am quite okay with it.

So Castrol power 1 is it? How about the new one from Castrol?

            2. Tyres i'm not very sure.
            Need some info here guys!

            3. Why do u wanna change the spokes? there's nothing like sitting for hours together polishing every single spoke
Agreed, I like em this way. can i fit tubeless in this? or its better to go the tube way?

            5. Go for it. ( does ur bike have the round dome? the pulsar classic?) I'm not really sure if this mod is possible on ur model of the pulsar, but if it is possible, go for it. Fox the OSram Night breakers preferrably ( not the Philips crystal vision).

It did not came with the round dome instead the second model came with it, i believe all UG2 were not with the round dome? , It crashed once from a friend of mine and then i changed the drone to the Ug3 one, i.e. the newer one on the P200? Are there any good front dome mods that can be done to it, besides the obvious headlamp?

            7. What kind of performance ru looking for? If it is good performance, just check ur clutchplates (rather the whole clutch kit), change to good spark plugs. somebody correct me if i gave him wrong advice on this
Clutchplates are new, well not new but yeah did some 8k+ and still goind good. Spark plugs? sure? Self is working fine in any condition. I think the battery though is a local one.

            8. ABS?? why not?? Its available in India for bikes. It is not a waste. It is a hard core safety modification. check www.saferideabs.com for entire details ( it costs only 1250/- bucks). Rear Disc - chuck the idea. waste of money for UR bike.
I sometime feel the need of rear disc when i am gliding through busy roads at over 70~80. The front disc does not gives me the confidence all the time say while turning. Anyways can shelve the rear disc idea for now. Where do i get the aformentioned ABS in Blore?

Are all the rest of the wires same???
if yes you can always cut and join.I have the same setup running on my P180UG3. The neutral wire connector was a different one on the coil and the bike. so i too had to cut and join

I have selected the tyres to begin with, how about michellin 4/18 tyres for back, and 3/18 for front, is it going to ve a overkill to put a 4/18 as rear? I do not want to lose out on top end or acceleration, however a few kms drop in mileage wont bother me, and where do you get the ABS kit in Bangalore?

I use Shell Advance 20W40. I've also tried elf Moto Gold 20W50 and it was fantastic. But I don't think that the top speed issues and the harshness is all about oil. To confirm, try changing the oil and see if the issue disappears. It could be something else too.

The widest I'd recommend for a Pulsar is a 90/90 for the front and a 100/90 for the rear. Get tubeless tyres and a soft compound if you want more grip, at the cost of tyre life. Avoid cheap, hard tyres and motocross block patterns as they will ruin the ride and stress the suspension.

You can't fit anything wider than a 90/90 on the stock front mudguard without modifying the inner clamps, because the tyre will catch on it. A 100/90 or a 110/90 at the rear will fit on the stock rims, but a wider one will fit badly, and the profile will be too rounded, and the contact area will be less, resulting in slippage..

Tyre rubber goes hard with time, and grip is reduced. A old tyre that has a lot of tread left is worse than a newer one with lesser tread. Change tyres periodically no matter what the tread looks like.

The mags look cool and are a lot, lot, lot easier to keep clean. Technically though, even the factory mags, made by ENKEI are heavier than the spoke wheels. I say get them anyway if you can afford them. Avoid local aftermarket brands like Rado. The factory wheels are way better.

Sprocketing will have some effect on the performance. Base rule is: smaller sprocket at rear or bigger at front = higher top speed, less pickup, more mileage. Larger sprocket at rear or smaller sprocket at front = better pickup, lower top speed, less mileage. It's harder to find sprockets for pulsar, because it has a different bolt pattern than other bikes. I've heard that the P200 sprocket + O-ring chain will improve pickup slightly, while not losing that much mileage, and lasts longer. I'll tell you more after I've had it done.

There seems to be some issues that need to be worked out with regard to that one, like the orphan green wire. Until someone figures that out, I'd wait.

You could get the front fairing alone from a Superbike body kit (not the original, but one of those fiber kits)and have it fitted. I've seen it done, it looks slightly mismatched, unless you modify the tail too. Or, you could try and fit the FZ/Fazer headlamp/fairing. Pulsar looks great with the FZ-S headlamp.

Usually, DTSi engines are very rev-happy and don't complain when you rev the nuts off them. If the engine seems too harsh, it could be something more than just the oil. Maybe it's time for some TLC at the service center. A valve-setting maybe?

Go for the ABS. It works really well. Rear disc conversions are expensice because you'll need to buy the P220 rear wheel and modify/replace the swingarm. Maybe the RTR 180's rear disc/wheel will be cheaper. Wait till the spares arrive.

Leather jackets and gloves are kind of expensive down south, because it's a luxury and not a necessity. Maybe you should try someplace north, like Delhi, where it gets really cold and people regularly use them. If you buy them during the early summer, you can get them even cheaper because they'll want to clear the stocks.
This sig made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs. And if you don't know what that means, you're not old enough to. :D
