  • What if I have damaged my engine during run-in period ?

My gladiator RS will be finishing it's 1st anniversary soon, and it has travelled 4800kms so far. Now,since this was my first bike,I had no idea of the break in period, and the dealer never told me anything about the same. And,I also got the manual a couple of months later . So,i never warmed the engine for a few minutes in the cold mornings..not that I went above 60kms/hr .And,neither did I rape the engine with high revs ,but I also didn't take care of her ,so to speak.
The symptoms I am facing now are gudda gudda tugging sounds in the 1st and 2nd gears , and no real engine refinement at low speeds. But,I don't have any heating, smoke, sluggish pickup, bad gear shifting or any other problems .

So,is there anything I can do to check that the engine is not screwed? Shall I ask for the engine be opened or anything ? Is there a need to polish the innards or something..dunno.N00bie here. Or,shall using a fully synthetic oil mask if any surface problems in the cylinder ?

I believe whatever had to happened has already happened. So doesn't make difference if engine got screwed up or not, although I belive that there has been not much damage done, if any. People have been using mototune breaking in methods. So, just don't worry at this point. I won't recommend opening up the engine at such an infant age for your bike. Just make sure that you get your bike serviced timely and take proper care of her.

@Gore: Care to explain the "gudda gudda tugging" sound. I had no clue what sound that is!

Minutely Check the oil seal rings (don't know the exact word) on your piston. If they are damaged, you can get them changed ... In extreme cases, the piston may also have suffered a lot, and may need replacement, but not in this case I'm sure.

This should solve the "no running-in" problems.. Good luck.

            +1 to that..
(Could be engine knocking sound, AFAI can think! )

However GORE, i don't think that noise should be because of you did not care about the bike for the first 1500kms.. Dude it's OK..

Now you have to keep in mind that you get it serviced regularly at the authorized service center, so that they can fix if anything is wrong!

P.S: My bike has completed 60k kms without any problem as i actualy did not know about the running period,After completing 1200kms i had an accident when i was rushing at close to 100 and a pedestrian jumped from footpath onto the road and *BANG*
            Thapak,Thudum,Splaash ,Booom!
Lot of scratches on me as well as ma bike!

Now i think the Spark Plugs have gone,i need to change them..

Gore, By your sounds....I vaguely guess it to be a simple problem with final transmission.
              > Adjust chain tension to correct level.
              > Grease or oil smaller sprocket and larger sprocket.

As I said, it's my vague guess, better explain the symptoms to your authorised svc station manager/supervisor and get things done. At 4.8K kms, don't think od serious damage to the engine.

It would be better if you took it to a mechanic and told him about the sound. By your words we can only imagine the sound and try to predict the culprit behind this problem.
And the other thing is,the sound of the Gladiator is very distinct. As I already mentioned somewhere,a well tuned Gladiator sounds like Bajaj Autorickshaw with a touch of metal to it. In the first two gears if you let go the throttle and again raise it you will get the distinct sound of metallic chain being pulled and the dhuk dhuk.....dhrummmm....... as the revs build up.
I hope that's what you are hearing.
AFAIK,the tolerance levels of modern engines are quite high and they can sustain heavy beating during run in period.

Nightwing..would so say the sound of the Gladiator is no way refined,as compared to a Unicorn ? Because..this engine sounds rash, bright and metallic..I don't know of any bike in India that sounds this cruel and brutal. And,the bike is serviced more regularly than necessary..It has already seen 5-6 oil changes over 4800 kms..

                    You can try two things:
First take it to a mechanic and tell him your problem. If the Yamaha SC handle it,the better it is.
Secondly, get hold of a Gladiator from a fellow xbhpian or a relative/friend/neighbour and ride it.If you cant, then visit the Yamaha SC and ask them to let them ride a Gladiator that has come in for servicing.
Compare the sounds and the refinement.

the sound i think is coming from the chain coz its loose..check the free play of the chain..i think it's gotten loose and is banging against the chain cover..get it tightened..probs shud be fine..
to check the engine:whenever u get the engine oil changed, ride around 1500 kms and then see how much oil comes out of the engine..if its around 800ml,engine is fine..if lesser than 700ml,ur engine's screwed..no faster way of checking the engine without opening it..
