  • HELP: Gun Shot Noise from Engine while Kick Starting

    Members,

    I've seen this noise coming from various motorbike engines while they are kicked start, it's like a Gun Shot sound. The sound would vanish when kicked again and the engine would get started but at first place why did this sound come?

    Precisely I've a Pulsar 150 DTS-i wherein I've got the engine worked around changing clutch plates and timing chain, but still I get this gun shot like noise at times when I kick start the engine.

    Please suggest what could be the problem.

      It is probably the starter Clutch Sound,it might have gone faulty!!

        A Back-fire or backfire is an explosion produced by a running internal combustion engine that occurs in the intake or exhaust system rather than inside the combustion chamber. An explosion in the inlet manifold, carburetor/throttle body or air cleaner of an internal combustion engine will typically occur when the intake valves are not shut prior to fuel combustion. The same term is used when unburned fuel or hydrocarbons are ignited somewhere in the exhaust system. A visible flame may momentarily shoot out of the exhaust pipe. Either condition causes an objectionable popping noise, together with possible loss of power and forward motion. A backfire is a separate phenomenon from the fire produced by Top Fuel dragsters.

        The term was derived from experiences with early unreliable firearms or ammunition, in which the explosive force was directed out the breech instead of the muzzle. From this came the use of the word "backfire" as a verb to indicate something that produces an unintended, unexpected, and undesired result.

          Causes - Lean Mixture, Wrong Ignition Timing.

          Check - Air-Fuel Mixture Ratio, Pulsar Coil for damages/improper placement, CDI Unit.

                  Spark plug gapp too big than what needed, else spark plug is getting fouled.

                    He may be talking about the sound due to the auto decomp at the end of a kick.

                    Else if you have a leaky head gasket, you might get a gun shot like sound, but that would also be accompanied by fumes.

                      Nay,
                      There ain't no fumes coming while kicking.

                      The point is it happens sometimes only while kicking. I presume if combustion is not taking place properly or fuel/air mixture is bad, the noise would be there all the time not just while kicking.

                      This noise is like when I kick, ignition doesn't take place and I hear a gun shot noise, like the rotation required to get the ignition has missed for a moment. It's hard for me to explain it, but the only concern is why this noise is there only while kicking pre-ignition, after a successful ignition no such sound is there, and also why only sometimes out of the blue, why not miss every kick making that noise.

                      I've checked the plugs and have also adjusted the volume screw, all set properly.

                        Ayush, do you get the same sound if you try kicking without the key in ON position?

                          Its an misfiring issue, change to new set of plugs would solve out.

                            ^^ Exactly...although the spark plugs may seem clean and fine to you they may be fouling.. Change them to brand new ones and try.
