  • Troubles with my Honda Unicorn - Need help/Advice

Hello All and felllow wing riders,

I currently own a Honda Unicorn bought early Aug 2009, till date completed around 700+kms and completed the I free service. ( Ps: i have had new 2 wheelers from 1992 i have never faced these issues before)

The following are the problems iam facing, i had reported all of these during the I service, i am still having these issues. Iam based in Bangalore my dealer and service point is Saphire Honda, JP nagar.

    1. Cold Start: Inspite of using the choke and kick start bike refuses to start, after may be 6-7 kicks it sputters, it wont start on self/electric start at all.

    2. After starting, warming for 3-5 minutes once i engage the 1st gear the bike will switch off, once its moves it will sputter for 5-6 kms as if no petrol is flowing to the carb but once i engage the choke the bike is smooth, these days i ride the bike with the choke on for the first 5-6 kms.

    3. inspite of adjusting the clutch play the gear lever position ( after reading old threads) still facing hard gear changes up and down shift

Fellow wing riders pls suggest/ advise me on how to rectify these issues, my last hope is to write to Honda Bangalore thro their website

    Sanjeev

@sanj_hondafan, For 1 & 2 , complain to top most level (email HMSI) and see that you get your carb. checked thoroughly / overhauled...wait for wing riders' feedback on gear lever

For problem NO 1 and 2 check whether your idle rpm is below 1400 rpm or not ..it should be around 1400-1500 RPM's....for starting in the cold morning follow these steps...
        • Always use the kick lever...
        • Push the acclerator just a little bit while kicking.. giving accleration to much while kicking is harmful for engine
        • Now use the choke lever immediately just after engine gets started....
        • keep the choke on for 8-12 sec ...
        • now leave the engine running for 1 min or so ...then u can drive at usual ...

Dont rip the bike in first 5 minutes since the engine oil wont have lubricated other properly...AND MOST IMP Never ever drive your bike while choke is on...

For hard shifts ...when you had last service of your bike and change of engine oil....for proper shifts try to shift between 3.5 k to 4k rpm..

In a few hours i got 7 calls from the Service Manager of Sapphire Honda , Bangalore requesting me to bring the bike, he has committed he will personally attend to this and he will be responsible to fix this issue ( verbatim), so i am taking the bike to the dealer cum service point tomorrow.

            Further Update

            Hello All

I took the bike today and met the Service Manager M. Nazir Hoosein of Sapphire Honda, Bangalore. He called for the best trained mechanic,Mr Zeeshan both of them took me and the bike to the service area, opened the carb cleaned it thoroughly, esp the jets, compressed air cleaned, ensured the floats are perfect, cleaned the spark plug, cleaned the air filter element, adjusted the valves, tappets, and timing chain, they also adjusted play, cleaned & lubricated the chain, clutch cable play and front brake play...basically an express quick service under the supervision of self and the service manager 2 pairs of eyes watching Zeeshan.

According to zeeshan one valve was a bit tight and the main jet had some dust/rust particles jammed.

The bike was washed and polished.

I took the test/trail it was a totally different Honda Uni, the power, the smoothness, it feels like a brand new bike.... this also shows what a shoddy job they did in PDI and I service.

The gear shift is so smooth, no noise at all while shifting up or down

I was charged Rs20/- for all of this

The ride back home was so good...the bike is so smooth, quiet and firing all cylinders so waiting to start the bike tomorrow to provide feedback on cold start...fingers crossed

So again it was not the machine but the man who serviced it.
And writing mail to Honda always work.
              Happy riding.

                Self Starts itself

Unicorn was drenched in chennai rain last week and didnt take it out till yesterday and had it covered till then .

Now when i turn on the key , the self start fires by it self and keeps starting even when the bike is on.

Tried pulling the self start switch out, but this still happens . Can hear a clicking (more clanking) noise near the engine. Is there a way to disable self start .
Could this be caused by a short , if so where ,water in the switch or somewhere else?

Can't ride the bike to the showroom as i don't want the battery to be drained , plus thinks its a bad idea driving with self start running/

Your starter relay might be fused due to rain. There is a fuse under seat and 1 near the relay (its inside Right Side Panel).

Remove the fuse under seat, if that doesn't help then remove fuse from relay and you can safely ride the bike till wherever you want.

Removing the fuse disconnects the power supply to all electricals from battery.

                  Happy Riding.

Recently using my brothers Unicorn 2005 model.
If the bike is kept aside for 3 or 4 hours, the above mentioned problem no.2 occurs (minus
once i engage the 1st gear the bike will switch off) . This is really really frustrating to run the bike on choke for atleast 3~4 kms, even if I increase the throttle suddenly the response is poor almost zero. after those 3~4 kms there is no problem with the bike. Cleaning carb, airfilter replacement, sparkplug replacement didn't help.
what to do to get acceleration immediately after starting the engine regardless of how long the bike stays off/cool.
I enquired a fellow unicorn rider on the road who is riding the old model and he said it feels like hell to ride the bike after it stays cool for 2~3 hours.
Does the problem lies in the carburettor? what if we replace the carb with another model? does the tacho still works?
