  • Things to Check before buying used Hyosung Comet 250

    Hi guys...,

Need a little help from u guys before I buy a used Comet 250 trading in my ZMA. I am a bit familiar with the single engine stuff (like ZMA, CBZ... ) but not a Oil cooled Vtwin engine (Hmmm..., yeah Definitely Not... ). Its a June 2005 Comet with 16k on the odo n Dual discs in the front... (yes two of them... ) n one in the rear as usual. It looks 'OK' from the exterior except some small stuff happened due to parking problems but I dont know things about the interior, "Engine Part" . Kindly let me know what are the things I need to check n issues to b verified before I buy it.

Also let me know what would be the ideal price to buy it if the engine is ok....

So, kindly help me out guys...

Here is the pic of the bike...

    Query Approved.

@Sri: The resolution of the picture is HUGE. Please resize it to 800x600 or thereabouts, and then post it.

The most important thing about the engine is that it has twin carbs . so tuning them is VERY difficult . you need to find a good tuner to set your carbs right . else your bike wont perform . rest you should not worry about anything . but the cost of spares is very high .
Chrome rims and bling ? get a real life !

also i doubt if you will be able to get the spares from the dealer or in the market. Will the dealer still be able to service it for you ?? My opinion would be to search for an other good bike other than the comet. The servicing is sure going to be an issue.

Check for the chain sprockets. If the bike has clocked 16k kms then it is the time for the comets for a change in chain sprockets set which would be around 12k for the set.
Check the brake discs if those are proper. If the owner has taken care and changed the brake pads in due time then disc surface shouldn't have much of steps (as in when you rub your fingers through the discs surface, it shouldn't be very uneven).
Check the battery, a stock one runs for 2-3 years. The new one will be around 6000/-.
Tyre condition. Since comet has an unusual profile for front and rear, you'll have to hunt a little bit more for the tyres. If the bike has really run 16k and not ripped, used sanely i guess tyres can still go for 8-9k more.

Engine wise you can't tell much by riding once or twice. But by listening to the sound of both the cylinders you can probably get the idea about of how synchronized they are.
If the synch is bad then you should feel little vibration in the tank and seat area.
If the bike has been running in bad synch then the spark plugs need to be checked otherwise it should be fine.
For now I can't think of any more thing to check. Get the service history of the bike like where has it been serviced etc....

No bro... its just dust... i checked with the service history, its clean. its been serviced all the time by a kinetic trained mechanic who used to work for kinetic service exclusively for comet service, now he has his own garage for sbks at nagpur. Deal is almost done.., just wanted to take an informed decision with help of my fellow bhpians helping me out...

Open the tank and check its rusted. A lot of 2004-2005 aquila/comets came without QC check in the tank. If its really rusted then, you'll have to get it cleaned and get the carbs, fuel lines and fuel pump. Otherwise a clogged carb will give u horrible problems !!!
Also check the battery, if u have to replace it soon after buying the bike, it'd cost you at least 6K !!!
Don't worrky about spark plugs, Comet come with NGK 8 series ones, u can seplace them with NGK 7 series. Its hotter plug and will give better cold starts !!
Kawasaki Ninja : Because lazy sunday afternoons should be despatched at 160 kmph!!!
Hyosung Aquila : Because sometimes you need to look cool while riding at 40 kmph and you can do that only on a cruiser !!!

                          @sri how much r u paying for it ?

check if it has an accident history get it checked by a comet owner otherwise u'll have lot of problems, i would suggest u order basic parts from the company where u payup like cluth n acc wire, brake pads from the ZMA work fine just a little mod needed buy n see last longer also, see if the cluth plates r in good condition cost the whole clutch n steel plates cost 5K or more, so think before u buy a comet, i'd owned one off the shelf on 2005 kept it till 2008

Correction the whole clutch plate assembly costs 200+ $ from Richard (Don't know how much in other places)
Just the friction plates cost 60$

Also sri, the levers seem to be broken. check the accident history of the bike too. Minor falls are ok but it shouldn't have had major ones.

thanx for the info bro.... the price was finalised to around 80k. im kind of new to the comet thing... so kindly let me know how do i check the clutch plates in a used comet?? is it only by verifying the way in which the gears shift? or is there any other way in specific for a comet...?

i did check the service history sumit bhai, it did hav minor incidents due to parking issues and a small fall. checked the forks n other stuff involving major accidents but its perfectly alrite... only minor issues like broken levers, a broken indicator lens n a very small dent in the tank... even the battery is good n there r no scratches on the body...

i bargained it for 80k... i hope the price is right... kindly check the tires in the pic n let me know guys r they ok...
