  • [Help]: Delhi to Manali ,Kasol on Bike !!(info required)

    Hi Guys .,,.
I am planning a bike trip to kasol on my Enfield Thunderbird around 20th sep.I have some queries :-

1)This is my first bike trip beyond city limits ,,is it ok to ride with a pillion??(im an experienced rider,,we'll be carrying just one backpack)
2)Which route to take-- NH-21A(panchkula-pinjaur-barotiwala-swarghat) route instead of NH21 or bypassing chandigarh by taking (Banur -kharar route)?
3)im thinking abt a stopover at swarghat or sundernagar..which of these two place hv better /cheap hotels..(Guesthouse types)..i hv heard that sundernagar is really SUNDER..or shd i complete it in one go from (4:00 am-6:00pm)
4)is it necessary to take bike insurance and pollution check paper along ??? (i hv my license and bike RC)

It is fine to take a Pillion, i think it would be even better if the pillion knows how to ride. and experience some times does not count when you are on the road, cause the person on the other end may just not have any.

2)Which route to take-- NH-21A(panchkula-pinjaur-barotiwala-swarghat) route instead of NH21 or bypassing chandigarh by taking (Banur -kharar route)?

Go Via Banur Kharar, ropar, kiratpur sahib. a lot better route than the other one

3)im thinking abt a stopover at swarghat or sundernagar..which of these two place hv better /cheap hotels..(Guesthouse types)..i hv heard that sundernagar is really SUNDER..or shd i complete it in one go from (4:00 am-6:00pm)

I think move on to final destination if possible i dont know whats the distance but i tell you . we left delhi at 5am got to chandigarh at 9:15 am sharp that includes a small 15 minute break at karnal. left chandigarh at 2pm and were in Manali at 11 pm. and we took ample break rode real slow. so just go steady and get to the final destination

4)is it necessary to take bike insurance and pollution check paper along ??? (i hv my license and bike RC)

Yes it is necessary to carry cause i am sure you do not want to be handed a ticket for not having all this. and more over if you are not insured and you meet with an accident then you would have more leagal problems than what you will be in if you have insurance. so if you are not insured on the bike do it atleast third party to get out of any leagal hassel if god forbid any thing happens. keep a copy of the original RC at home incase you loose it and do keep a extra key for bike. i have lost it once i remember the hassel. try to keep extra tube for your tyre some times it is hard to find a 19 inch tube .

any ways you take care and ride safe.

Stop over at Bilaspur, would break the journey appropriately. And yes, stick to the NH-21 at all times. The swarghat route is in a bad shape

@Kurt: Have you been to Kasol? How is the place from a photography stand-point?

Answering NOT on behalf of Kurt!
Kasol is a wonderfully quiet place just three kms before Manikarn on Bhuntar Manikaran route.

The route is good, though very narrow at times and has lots of sharp blind turn, be aware of oncoming HP taxis, they can force you to go off road( rather Off Track) most of the times.

Kasol is a very small town, kindda village, but is pretty quiet, great food, especially the Israelite, good number of internet Cafes, decently affordable accomodation as low as 300 rs. for a double bed room-well carpeted- geyser attached rooms, good place to spend a chilled night out at roof top cafe.

As for the sceneic thing, well, I am no lensman so cant very much say on that factor, but it surely is a wonderful place to spend an evening, and also is good during rains, the greenry is just awesome.! let me see if I attach some pics that I took last year.

@DCS: Kasol sure sounds tempting to me! Thanks for answering on behalf of Kurt. Food and all, I can live without for a couple of days; no issues, neither do I mind having Israeli or any kind of menu.

That greenery, and small village part (coupled with cheap accomodation, which I want JUST to sleep) is what has got me pumping!

Brilliant place, extremely beautiful! Photographers like you would love it. The lush green dense forest with the parvati river flowing through!

Though you would have to pinch yourself to believe you still in India! Why? ... because of the plethora of Israeli junkies that have spawned up there! Everywhere you see, you'd find hippies smoking pot and dancing in their stride!.

Nonetheless it is quite a relieving place for a weekend. Normally when I am tired after a long friday i ride up there the next day, stay for a night, sit alone on the rocky bank, maybe try few shots ... inhale the enigma. Its fun

And yes, not to forget the manikaran sahib gurudwara ... and the aghori gufaa nearby!

Edit: As it seems, dcs has already done the honors

@ Kurt: Bhai , u were off line hence I answered the query, but nonethe less, No one's better then Kurt for information on Himachal.

I felt like adding the pot and Hippee thing but somehow thought that it would send a wrong message across! Mates..Smoking Kills!! Smoking a pot simply expedites the process!

@ Aryan: I dont really know how would a lens man feel in a place like Kasol but for someone like me who at times feels like getting out of the maddening rush of a big city...Kasol is a wonderful Nirvana. Also, you have three bullet mechanics over there just on the small bridge, who would not work on any other machine apart for a bull, so be prepared, you may have to tighten the drive chain of your bike yourself in case if you are not on a Bullet.
