  • Purchase of new bike

    Hi All,

I am new to xbhp and this is my first post. I am planning to buy a bike with a budget of around 80K. I will just tell the purpose of the bike. I am a working professional and would be driving around 40 kms a day(to& fro) to office for about 3 days in a week on the Eastern Express Highway in Mumbai which is a descent road. I will be occassionally taking to long drives (once in a quarter). I want a bike with a blend of utility and styling. I am confused on shortlisting the bike.

I had zeroed on some of the bikes:
    Avenger 200 DTSI oil cooled
    Pulsar 220 DTSI oil cooled
    Pulsar 180 DTSI
    Yamaha FZ

I have done some research on the net (as that is my job also as a professional) and enquired with some local mechanics. They (90% of them) said that Pulsar has a high maintenance after a year or two and recommended not to buy. According to them, Yamaha is good but then if I compare the power and the cost then I am paying Rs.76K in mumbai for 153 CC for Yamaha but whereas I will be paying Rs81K in mumbai for 220 CC for Pulsar. Also, Yamaha will give me less mileage inspite of less power but after all Yamaha is Yamaha. Avenger is on my list as it is a cruiser with a comfortable driving position and comfort for the pillon rider also. Pulsar 180 -- with some less power as compared to P220 but a very high mileage (P180 -- 40-45 Km/ltr & P220 -- 30-35 km/ltr)

I know I have spoken a lot but please give me your valuable views

The Wheel was a great invention; Two Wheels with a Motor in between was even better!

Avenger 200 : 4 stroker Cruiser ....... Suitable only for Highway ridings Not suitable for City ridings - High maintenance cost after 1 or 2 years.....

Pulsar 220 : Fastest Indian --- Nothing more to say about it -- Since you have got opinions that Pulsars will be high in maintaing after 2 years of riding....Not sure about this becuase im not a Pulsar owner....But yes Pulsars engine will produce Knocking sound after some years of riding...

Pulsar 180: No Comments as this also lies in Pulsar family

Yamaha FZ : There are different opinions floating about this Bike - the main facter is Reliability of the parts used in the bike are very Bad ...And moreover with Yamaha you cannot except Mileage....But will get equal power as other 150cc's

Why cant you try the other two meaner options

RTR 180 : Good bike with mean featurs - you get better mileage then other 180's in the category
ZMA R or ZMR : Good bike for High way driving.....The meanes Tourer........But again spare parts are really costly....and after the wrranty period maintenance too cost more.....

        Thanks for the suggestion.

Most of the reviews of bike magazine like Overdrive rate RTR 180 below all other competitor like Pulsar and Karizma. As the case of Karizma (old one) they have the same old tachomoter, no gas shock absorbers, etc.. The new ZMR is good but damn costly. It will go above 1 lakh in mumbai which is way beyond my budget.

ZMA provides more a smoother Ride for long distances than any other bike produced in INDIA.....
Gas shocks will provide only a little bit of higher comfort then the normal Shocks....
Many of the Indian bikes stilll has Analog Tacho- P220, R15, RTR or also not exceptions....
Im not sure how you consider 180RTR in lower side --- My best advice to you is to Test Drive all the machines and come to an Conclusion....

Since most of your trips include everyday commuting i would suggest going for the either the FZ or the P220 depending on your requirements of power. Commuting in mumbai though is hardly an power affair and the fairing-less fz will probably be much more at home than the P220. The p220 would be a good tourer though since you mentioned that you will be taking tours in between. Decide between these two and do not forget to take a test ride of both the bikes.

well.. I think, end result.. you would boil down to P220 and will forget about rtr/p180/fazer.
get a test drive for everything, but once you feel the power of 200, you will forget everything else..

              points to ponder:

              1. If you are getting P220 with so many features in 80K, obviously part quality would be below yamaha. But bajaj has made it suitable to indian road. your choice. I think you know the features.. tubeless wide tyres, best headlights in country, 55W bulb, fastest indian, stylish tourer, best byke from bajaj so it has all their features etc etc..

              2. If you are a cruising person, forget everything else and go for avenger 200.. but that has its own limitations in bumper to bumper traffic ..

              Best of luck..

Yammy the way to go... My friend got P220 blowed its engine 3 times in a year

I have FZ-S bought two months back.. killer looks.. definately many a times a head turner.. and a good bike with decent power

                    P220 is all power

And with the launch of FAZER it kills the competition for looks of headlight.

I would suggest to get a FZ and modify its color to the ones by Ghost Riderz Anniversary issue

If you are a real biker then go for P220/RTR 180 else settle down for FZ/FAZER

                        Hi All,

I have test ridden both Yamaha Fazer and Pulsar 220. I am planning to buy one of the bikes. The handling is great and frankly I didnt find any difference between them. Fazer's stance of riding is better than FZ. I am not an expert and welcome comments from the experts in the forum. Please give me your opinion as to which bike I should opt for. Both these bikes cost the same on road. As mentioned earlier, one of the mechanic told me that Bajaj's product quality detoriated overtime as the company is after producing more to stay in the competition and in the process overlooked quality. I need opinions of people who own these bikes on their opinion. Fazer, as I understand is the same as Fz in terms of technical specifications but with flaring. I have gone through ownership experiences and read many places that alloy wheels of Fazer cant withstand Indian potholes. In the same way Bajaj Pulsar suffers from complaints like loose nutbolts, noise from rear disc brakes, etc.. Please suggest me a way out. I need to finalise the bike asap.

^^^why not the Apache 180?...It's comes bang in between the fazer and Pulsar and except for the vibrating bit, which IMO is not something to bother about,it's a great bike.Do have a TD of this bike too and then decide. As far as the P220 is concerned,Bajaj has ironed out most of the problems and it definitely shows...but fazer wins hands down when it comes to quality though the alloy part makes me wonder...
It all begins with a thumb-start -- Oh, wait, I forgot the kill-switch

Fazer would be able enough in the city but the P220 would also be more comfortable for high speed (100 kmph plus) highway runs.

The Fazer is basically the Fz with a half fairing, the engine is exactly the same.. Satan69in had earlier owned the FZ and currently the owner of a P220 DTSi.. get in touch with him is you want to get a first hand experience from an owner of both the bikes.
