  • HELP: P220 DTS-FI - Starting Troubles

    Hey Guys,

After a much awaited wait for more than 6 years I finally fulfilled my dream of owning a bike which would set the roads on fire(which I honestly thought it would). I wanted to invest on a new bike and as I was already TOO LATE, the era of those roaring RD's, 100's and 135's had more or less become extinct and I had to settled in for a P220 DTS-FI which I purchased it on the 15th April of this year.

The bike was initially very good, responsive, fast, quick in the corners, gave an amazing throttle response and almost zero lag between gear shifts which made me feel very proud and exhilarated on my decision on choosing this to be my first bike in all aspects until recently.

Two weeks before I sat on the bike and started it as-usual and for the first time she coughed..!! It was the first time she was reluctant to start in the first attempt. I was pretty surprised and started riding and to my dismay she started going off every 100 meters. I ignored it thinking there would be a water clog somewhere as I had parked her in the rain for a few minutes and continued with the journey for another kilometer and off she goes again..!!

This bike neither has a kicker nor a choke and not even a Reserve knob (which was very prestigious till then for me thinking my bike is free from and ranks one level above by not equipping all those old conventional parts) and all I could do was to try starting her using Electric Start. SHE DID NOT START..!!

All I could do was to push her to one of my friends house and call up Khivraj Motors - Kasturba Road - Bangalore and narrate them my sad tale. They did speak to me very convincingly and made me feel as if they are gonna air lift the bike anytime, fix her in mid air and put her back on the road. That was the level of confidence they filled me with. After nearly 10 days one chap turns up.

He checked the Sparks Plugs - pulls both the connections and plugs them back them. Next he removed the seat and started fiddling around with all the wires(even Edison wouldn't have been so confident), detaching all them and plugging them back in, checking for Fuse failures and quite a lot of things and while all this was happening I was standing absolutely clueless. Because there were so many wires, so many wires and so many wires that I decided its worthless to even make an effort because there were SO MANY WIRES.

Ultimate Verdict - HE Couldn't START THE BIKE.

The worst thing is he, of all the people in the world HE told me to sell this bike and buy the new carburetor version as he feels this bike is very complicated to handle(Looks who's talking. The Chief Service Coordinator of Bajaj Service Station)and if I have not mentioned it earlier in my post my bike has finished 3000 kms, finished second service very recently and has been maintained very well. They tell the Fuel Filter should be changed every 2500 kms and blames it on me for not doing so as if I day dream all the things that must be replaced on a routine basis. The best part is its been 15 days and still they do not have the Fuel Filters in stock. and my new bike is lying UNATTENDED. Hurts is not the word and I will only turn things from BAD to WORSE if I exert all my sorrow on the mechanic.

    To sum it up
    1. The Fuel Filter has not been replaced because there is not stock.
    2. The rear break screams so melodiously that I have stopped using the rear break to avoid cold and irate stares from other riders.
    3. Service is pathetic as the bike feels the same before and after service.
    4. EVEN AFTER 15 DAYS THE BIKE IS GETTING DRENCHED IN RAIN AND THERE IS NOBODY TO ATTEND IT.

Is there any Service Station or a mechanic who can handle the P220 FI version? Please suggest.
When you lose, do not lose the lesson.

Try to contact a superbike mechanic. They are well experienced in handling fi bikes.

Also just check pigtail clutch switch. I also faced similar starting problems in beginning.

It's really sad to see your level of disappointment. 220Fi is really a good bike, but unfortunately these SC guys make it worse. Trust me The service manager at Khivraj is an EDIOT!

FI bikes are complex but that does'nt mean that they are unrelaible. I would advice you to speak to Mr. Venkat Shyam of Auto Service, else shoot a mail to Bajaj. Auto Service, is the best possible PBK care you can expect.
