  • My Engine is sounding like a Mixi

    Hi Guys

My Pulsar 180 UG IV is 900kms old

I completed 500km on friday and went for 1st sevice on Saturday
SC guys poured Castrol Active Xtra 20W50 in it.

Engine was smooth and sound was good

Yesterday I went on a 350 km long trip (tro and frow) with a pilion.

As my bike is still in runin preiod I was taking all the precautions

My average speed was 60-62, Ocasionnaly I would go to 68-70 (to overtake)
Only once I hit 80 just to test

I took 15 mins break after every one hr (60 kms)

After travelling nearly 120 kms (2nd break), When I started my bike the idle sound was like a mixi. I was like . I gave short throtles, it sounded ok but idle sound was like (khis khis, some what like old XCD 125). I was reallty pisses off and cursed my self for hitting that 80.

Any way I started driving, After wearing helmet I was unable to hear it, but if i Ride without helmet I could easily hear that sound.
Its not any additional sound but default engine sound has become like a mixi

Any way I completed trip, as it was late 7PM so Bajaj service center was closed, so went directly to home.

Today Morning before starting my bike I prayed to god.
and Woila the idle sound was good I was daam happy and thanked Bajaj. But I was near my Office (20km travel) the engine sound was again like mixi. I am really really sad.

    Guys please help me out
I admit that yesterday I travelled it hot afternoon and the engine is new and all that but I took proper breaks and only once hit 80.

Is Bajaj Bikes are that bad ki bike starts sounding like a mixi if you hit 80 only one during runin period
I have invested nearly 70K on this thing and have not bought some chinese toy

I dont know what to do as I can visit Service center only at next weekend. and I just cant live with my P180 which I bought only 2 weeks back sounding like a mixi
No Matter Whether Guys buy 220cc Pulsars or 350cc Royal Enfields,

May be Loose Tappets?"Mixi" Sound? Is it like "tik tik" sound?then it is loose tappets?the symptoms seems like so.When cold ,sound is normal.but when Engine gets heated ,sound changes.
BTW,Change the speeds and complete the running-in.don't keep same speeds.change Engine Oil.Activ is a semi-synthetic Oil?I think till 3000-3500kms use Mineral Oils.Veedol is what Here Bajaj Service Uses.

its possibly an engine overheat, as the engine has not bed in properly. Though the company recommends 1000 kms, people ride their machines carefully till 3,000 + kms. Your methodology during the long ride was right, no doubts about that.

Please get the bike checked asap. do not mention the long trip, or else they will tend to put the blame on your riding only.

          @aryan thanks for approving

@prakash I will try to record the sound in the evening and will post it here, is it allowed ???
Even I doubt that Castrol Active is SS, but few members in Engine oil thread said that its a Mineral

          Can some one please clerify

Please tell me a good Mineral oil (20W50)
where can I get Motul 30004T (20W50) in New Delhi

@jd, Even I want to visit Service center, but this Dam office, I am only free on weekends and on this sat there is diwali.

Anyways ,If the Sound is really Horrible ,Ask Bajaj Service to Adjust Tappets and Valves for Proper Clearance. That Will Help. My RTR180 after 1500kms was having too much tappet noise/valve chatter. They did the Adjustment and Now it is tolerable.

it can be something pretty basic & simple. Pls take it to the SC or to a knowledgeable mechanic.

It it is not solved, you can gift the mixie to mom and write your name in the history as the son who gifted the most expensive mixi.

what other symptoms do you see when the bike is making that noise.. is the bike over heating.. any change in performance.. at what rpm it makes noise..

check for these things as well.. oil level .. idle rpm...
need not worry .. also dont switch to motul for atleast till 5000 kms... later you can plan if you want to switch..

you can understand tappets as the the part inside the engine which is used to support the opening and closing of intake and exhaust valves...
usually tappets get loose with the age of bike.. and loose tappets certainly change the sound of engine.. you should get the tappets set by a well trained person only..

I think Engine oil is gone bad. So when heated up the engine is sounding like a mixi.

Tappets are the Supporting Structures Which Operates Valves.
Tappets gets loosened during the course of time.Tappets should be adjusted and valves are adjusted for proper tolerance levels by a Trained Person(here Bajaj Service).
Here is a Picture of a Bullet's Tappet Cover removed and tappets beind adjusted :

Bike Over heating : My bike is heating a lot, I dont know its over or what, Never ridden a 180cc before

Change in rpm : When I start Idle rpm:12K after riding say 10km idle rpm: 15k-18k (the needle is moving) looks like bike is Breathing

Change in performance : No, in fact my bike is now more open, only this Daam sound

Engine oil : Check, its b/w both markers in the morning

After riding 10-15kms noise in comming at all rpms specially at low rpms and when bike is at neutral and i rev to 2k-3k

@rahul But the oil is only 400Kms old

                          @Prakash & cscchaudhary Thanks bro

@all Please dont make fun guys, My baby is in pain

doesnt sound like something serious wrong with your bike... as far as engine revving is fine and oil level is normal .. you need not worry. could be that you are not use to the sound whats pulsars are meant to make..

for the first 100kms after an oil change.. gear shifting and engine sound is very smooth..
when you visit SC next tell them about the sound and get the bike serviced in front of you if possible..
