    Modify FZ16 for better performance

    Hey guys,

    Can somebody tell me how can I modify my FZ16 for instant pick up and more performance. By Performance I actually mean speed. I do care for mileage, but can give it out for speed.

    This is running in my mind after I saw a couple of bikes in Yamaha ridetech challenge. It was as if they were blasting on a 600 cc bike.

      For starters fit the Daytona racekit by Yamaha. It cost around Rs18000/- all over India with fitting. It sure helps your bike rev more. You will be able to notice the difference. Make sure you post your reply about the experience.

        -and you could add a racing throttle to that. This will increase the opening of the butterfly on the carburettor.

        - you could go with the usual, free flow air filter, and a upsize in jetting to increase/improve the fuel flow and the breathing characteristics of the engine.

        - Dunno, but i feel, reducing the width of the rear tyre will help lower the drag generated by the rear wheel, maybe give better top end and acceleration. But this can be confirmed only by experimentation with a thinner rear wheel.

          ^^ +1 to that. You can fit thinner tyres(the ones on other 150 cc bikes).

            An other forum's member said, that he installed a K&N without upjetting on FZ16, and it worked fine. The Bike was performing & sounding great, without heating up much... He argued that Yamaha bikes already have a rich mixture.

            Try it. If it gets lean, then upjet it... But, your mechanic should know what he's doing for sure, ok?

            Also, a good freeflow exhaust will decrease its weight, and add punch to its power delivery.
            And I agree, tyres could be replaced with smaller ones to gain overall performance.

            I dare NOT recommend Daytona. Joel was so against it, due to very less VFM, and some other reasons too...
            So, if you are near Bangalore you should meet Joel and discuss "alternatives". He's a helpful guy. Good luck.

              Apart from free flow exhausts, free flow air filters, carb tuning and jetting I ve not seen any info on some hard core souping up of the FZ like a performance head or porting. I can think of ways of making performace mods on a two stroke but really am oblivious to tweaking a 4 storke engine. Dunno if anyone here have tweked the FZ's engine at all. And I hope expert tuners on the forum like Joel can list out some of the possibiltes if they have worked on an FZ.

              Cos I feel that engine has a lot of potential but has been detuned by YAMAHA and they have held the horses a bit and can be tweaked to be quite a belter.

                    I had a quick check with my mechanic. He said Daytona is way costly for what it does. He further referred to some jets from butterfly.

                    He also said that the mileage would drop to 25 (which is now 35-37) and increase the sound a lot.

                    I am still confused. Maybe I would try just a K&N filter and a jet from him which would cost around 3000-4000.

                    Any suggestions are welcome.

                      Bcoz,same problem is happnening to my FZ-Engine Overheating. When i put my legs in foot rest, i can feel the heat coming from engine.

                        Hi..how much has your bike run? Have you run it in properly? you can try changing your engine oil and putting in something like a 20W50 by Mobil (mineral not synthetic). Yamalube by personal experience is not suited for our conditions as I feel it thins out very fast. You may also try using a NGK platinum or iridium plug...it definately smoothens out the vibes. I think the Fz does not run rich as most of the times when i'v checked the plug, the readings indicate a leaner mixture inspite of me tuning the carb rich. I guess im not tuning it correctly or maybe it is very lean. Overall I feel that most of these new bikes are designed to run very lean coz of the emission norms and thats why most of them end up having problems earlier than the older bikes due to running hot.

                              I have fitted daytona exhaust on my fz. I have touched a top end of 126 as compared to 118 ealier in the stock bike with some better 0-60 timing maybe (not verified). I have recently fitted a k&n (no increase in power), but at high revs the bike is missing beats.

                              The mechanic suggested upjetting the carburettor as the increased demand in fuel is not met. I have a few questions...

                              a) will only upjetting my bike in the current condition help to increase top end?
                              b) If yes, what is the correct specs of the jet?
                              c) will porting help a 4 stroke bike to gain power? Recently I read in a bike india mag. that a guy in Chennai can modify a karizma to 300 cc and 30 bhp of power! Is it possible? If yes then shud be possible in fz too...
