  • RPM Meter for a non RPM bike

    Hi Guys

i am sure it sounds like a ""Ahem"" .. dumbo question.. neverthless

My bike has just crossed the first service mark. I have been actively reading through the forum and more particulary the "Run-in" techniques in the "Desi bikes" thread.

My issue is I have a TVS flame and there is no RPM indicator on that

I understand that we cannot just a fix a RPM meter just like that .. But is there a way we can sort of gauge RPM .. Say I know that my idling RPM (warm) is about 1300 .. I move "gradually" (Very cautiously) and move along slowly and reach about 50 - 55 ... No sudden burst.. no jerking ...

What would my approximate RPM ? Can approximating techniques exist for this ?

Reason for asking this .. my riding behaviour is mostly non jerking slow and steady ... so if i get to know this .. It would be easy to follow the run-in techniques posted by gurus here...

Hope I make sense and yeah ...Thanks in advance

I've seen some for costs upto Rs 5K. Finally felt that it is useless and scrapped the idea.

don;t remember where all I saw those stuff but there was something on dealxtreme.com too.

I guess you can fix a RPM gauge from a Shaolin/Shogun/KB100 after some modification to the containing body. This should sit on the handle bar idealy. Alternatively, contact Pricol for getting one custom made solution. And let me know too.

              Hey Guys

Thanks for the answers till now. My bike is brand new, so even though i am Itching to do that - Fix a custom RPM gauge, I am going to delay it for some more time. Thanks anyways for the time taken for suggestions.

@thunder - Thanks for making it easy
Would you happen to know when the power mode kicks in (I have never gone above 45 till now - first service time) and what is the likely RPM at that time. That should help me to get a feel of the RPM. (Considering that I am at top gear - TVS Flame - so 4(th) gear)

              Hoping to get a response.

Sorry mate - I've never tested that
But Once the Power Mode Kicks in the Speedo shows speed as 75kmph,
Even a little bit of throttle switches to Power Mode
So in 4th cog till 75 is Economy Mode....
But i always prefer to be on 60's anywhere anytime any traffic....

                  Thanks @Thunder bro

                  Thanks @Thunder bro ...

I will keep the Eco mode and 60 in mind. I prefer to do it the same way. At max 60, good for me and the bike

Do let me know if you do manage to get some tech data though, in future.

If Im correct, you want to know what RPM you are running at certain speed. Is that correct?
So until you can fix a RPM meter, you need to rely on your senses to get an approximate figure.
Other bikes with similar cc with 4 gears can provide a better figure. They won't be exact, but close. Anyway, I ride ZMA, so at 60kmph, RPM is approx. 4k in 5th gear. yours RPM will be higher in 4th gear at the same speed, maybe 4.5-5k.

Try to note the sound of your engine at given speed, say 50/60kmph in 4th gear.
Now, try not to exceed that sound in any gear. It is very easy to over rev in lower gears, but since you mentioned that your riding style is gentle, you shouldn't have any problem with your run-in process as long as you keep it under 60kmph.

Thanks @kaynamatis ... The info will be very useful. I guess I will try to note the RPM range as suggested. Thanks for taking time off to pass on some tips.

                      Cheers

Sorry Ranjith, I am afraid I didn't get you. Are you mentioning about my driving in Eco / max 60. If yes, thats as much I would like to drive , I am no Speedster / Daredevil like most guys here are

Pls let me know if I understood otherwise

                          Cheers

Ranjith asked that did you finish the first 1000/2000 km on your bike(run-in period). If yes, then you need not worry about speeds/rpm crossing any particular mark.

Well, I personally don't feel the need of a rpm meter on a bike, unless it is used for drags. You just need to maintain moderate speeds for proper run-in.

The following is the run-in procedure which was given in the manual of my bike.

During the first 1000 km, do not cross these speeds
                            1st gear: 15 kmph
                            2nd gear: 30 kmph
                            3rd gear: 45 kmph
                            4th gear: 55 kmph

During the next 1000 km(1000-2000 km), do not cross these speeds
                            1st gear: 20 kmph
                            2nd gear: 40 kmph
                            3rd gear: 65 kmph
                            4th gear: 75 kmph

You can follow a similar pattern of run-in for your bike.

Thanks @moeeed, yes, I get the question now asked by Ranjith and I have NOt yet crossed 1000 mark. doing 650 + now.

drag races .. nope.. thats not me, but I read a lot about the experiences that you guys share here. simply awesome.

the speed marks will be a good reference guide and I will try and maintain that speed.

                              Cheers
