  • Smoking Bull

    Hi Bull owners,

This query is from my dad who has an almost 20 year old Bullet 350 Std. A couple of weeks ago he gave the bike for basic servicing at an authorised Enfield Service Center. Though not very satisfied, he has little choice due to lack of good mechanics in Visakhapatnam. After getting the bike back, he is noticing a lot of Smoke coming out of the exhaust. Almost like a smoking diesel vehicle. The smoke is white in colour. The smoke comes out when the Engine is started for the first time in the day, cold start. The bike is used once or twice a week. The smoke goes away after the bike has run for about 1-2 kms. This has never happened earlier. Dad says, there is no drop in power or anything else.

Anyone got any thoughts on this? Is it something serious?

I had a similar problem in my Bullet some fifteen years ago!

      Hi Mash,

Could you ask your dad to try something out. It will either solve his issue or help troubleshoot further.

When he is parking the bike overnight or longer, please ask him to leave the piston at TDC. i.e. slowly pushing the kick starter to the point where the ammeter slips into negative.

When he next starts the bike, ask him to check if the white smoke continues to appear.

If this doesn't solve the issue, then the mechanics may have screwed around with your dad's Big End oil feed bushing.

Even i am facing the same issue. Gave the bike for engine overhaul in Authorized Service Center (ASC).
Replaced bore, piston, clutch plates, chain sprockets and some small things which i am unaware off.

Prior to this there was no problem but now my bike drinks OIL more than PETROL. It consumed almost 1l OIL for 1000kms.

Gave it back to ASC, they replace bore and piston and again the same is happening. That fellow is telling engine Head might be spoilt so have to replace that..!! Can engine Head spoil so easily which didn't spoil from past 29 years

What can be the problem other than the Oil Feed Big Bush thing told by the Grease Monk.!!!

I gotta go and sit along with the mech and get it done, its almost 20days my bike is in ASC.

Thanks for the response. Will surely ask him to have this checked. Initially i thought it could be excess oil in air filter, but that would continue to burn and not go off after 1-2 kms. Shall keep you all updated on this.

please keep posting your suggestions. that would help immensely.

How weird can this be. The same issue is now happening in my bike too. Mine is a Suzuki Fiero 2001 model. Smokes like crazy when i start the engine in the morning or after office. But after running it for like 2-3 kms, no smoke at all.

I hope this is not serious?

PS: The bullet is in Visakhapatnam and Fiero in Bangalore.

But why is it not happening continuously? Why just the first couple of Kms? I revved hard after riding for 2 kms, and no smoke at all.

                  Smokin Bully....

There is no issue with your bullet. Since the bike is 20yr old so the capacity of engine oil in oild bullet is lesser than new versions. Generally ASP people forget or don't know about it.
All old bullet has same capacity tank for oil but different in requierment.
so ASP people poured extra oil for example. 2.250ml or 2lit. The requierment is bassically 1.450ml for oldie...For new version it is near to 2.250ml and for TBTW it is near to 2.650ml.
earlier there was one more level which they recommanded 1.650 ml. so total there are four levels. I suggest you to ask your mech about how he fill the oil in the engine? secondly please remove the engine oil from the oil tank and refill it with 1.300ml then u will notice the level on dip stick. When mech remove the engine oil from tank it becomes empty so always prefer to fill lesser than said otherwise due to air pocket the oil might pop up from tank mouth. Then let the settle in the engine and rechcek the level and refill it again till the mark.
After riding for some km smoke disappears it is due to the level in the tank decreases coz of circulation. But when u start the engine for the first time the oil level settle and goes above the limit so for sometime whatever the oil comes in the chamber starts burning. So please check the level if it is less then remove excess oil. Now u must have road the bike for few km after changing the oil. So some amount of oil might come in silencer. In that case u might ask me the same Q regarding smoke. Well when the engine will heat up the silencer will too. So even after correcting the engine oil level u might have some smoke but don't worry it will go or just wash the silencer. Let me know.....Please ask your mech to refer old manuals rather than new manuals.

I doubt it is an issue with the rings, since that would cause it to smoke constantly. The fact that it smokes only on start up points at something else.

Thanks for the reply. If this reply was for my problem then the oil level was going low with the number of kms i clock. The oil level was kept right. (as per dip stick level)
The mech is suspecting that there could be a crack in Head

Reg Fiero : Hmmm i said so bcz generally people wont notice once the bike starts moving and the smoke will be negligibly visible to eyes but the oil will be burning. There may be different reason too. Am not sure.

I topped up the oil level, It was near one of the lower bars on the dip stick. keeping a close eye on the oil level. Regarding not noticing the smoke, i do rev hard once or twice while waiting for the Traffic light to turn green, No smoke at all.

All right, could not visit the mechanic, however, the smoke as per some very experienced persons, is Fuel. Now what could be causing this? Is this Major?

Adulterated fuel can be the cause. Its like using Kerosene in bike. But that will give smoke through out and also there will be different smell which u can easily make out.

Update regarding my Bullet - There was a minor leak in the Head, probably between Valve and Valve Guide. Hopefully by Monday bike will be ready

Hmmm bad fuel could be, as I had filled up fuel from a Highway pump, was a short ride to Mysore from Bangalore. Well the bike is on reserve, so planning to fill from a known pump and continue monitoring. In the mean while, checked the Engine Oil level. No drop in engine oil level after regular running all week and a 100km run yesterday. So oil not an issue i suppose, Do correct me if I am going wrong in my analysis. Also, checked the Spark Plug. The plug was BLACK and DIRTY. Now what does that say?
