  • [Help]: Carbon Deposit in the Sparkplug

    Hi Guys,

My 1 month old Discover DTS-si started giving trouble. Below are the list:

    i. Switches off at low speeds
ii. Loss of power (block kinda effect)
    iii. Low mileage (55-60 kmpl)
iv Cold start took way too long (10 minutes)

I had taken my bike to Kivraj autos where I got my first service done after 500 kms. The service engineer diagnosed and said that there is one thick layer of carbon deposit on botht he spark plugs and needs cleaning. He used the sand paper and removed this thick layer.

Now, after testing the bike today (20-25 odd kms) it seem to be fine.

Can any one help me understand how 1 month old spark plug (just 1 month & 650 kms of use) can develop a carbon deposit.

Please just help me to understand the relation between such a spark plug and the above problems I have listed.

    Thanks, MutantX

When the AFR is too rich, carbon will form. Else, it is because you ride with the choke ON for too long.
Your biking tells a lot about the person you are!

Yes, AFR seems to be rich, but Choke ON? Does'nt Disco DTSSi comes with Auto Choke? or it could be Auto Choke Problem as well?

I am sorry what is AFR?

Yes Discover 100 DTS-si comes with auto choke. Well most modern bikes come with autochoke? will it be because of bad sprakeplug? umm will it make sense in requesting for replacing the sparkplug?

AFR is Air Fuel Ratio. For the gyan you can look at Air-fuel ratio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

But simply, in the Carb there's a screw which has been set to let very high ratio of fuel to enter your engine, and thus the carbon fouling you get on Carb.

Sparkplugs are not at fault, your bike is new, just ask the Khivraj guys, to solve it, come what! Whatever the problem is, it's their headache. May be they have adjusted the carb now, test for about 15 days and check

Rahul, Thanks for the information. Well the tech guys said that things have been sorted out.

All they did was to pull out the spark plug and rub it with sand paper. They also did some adjustments to god knows what. But let me give you an update after a week.

Adjustment must have been to Carburetor. BTW there are few bike with Auto Choke, in fact few from Bajaj, which includes Discover DTS-Si, XCD and 220Dtsi.

Is it ok to use Isopropyl Alcohol to clean spark plugs?

Shouldn't be a problem, but wouldn't that be costly than Petrol? Whatever you use, make sure plugs are absolutely dry before installing them back.
