  • Confused: Help needed

    If I replace my bike's tyres with a low height tyre what can be the effects?

    for example: front stock is 90/90 replace it with 90/80
    rear stock is 100/80 replace it with 100/70

    1. Positive
    2. Negative

    like i think the one effect will be reduced ground clearance. and may be reduced mileage.

        Overall tyre diameter will be reduced, thus altering the ratios. Smaller wheel = lesser top speed, but a little more acceleration. But, why do you want to change to a different spec tyre anyway?

          @hyper: thanks for reply. Actually wanted to increase the acceleration bit more and i thought if the height can be reduced in this way the stability will increase alongside. but can you tell me about the ratio that how much the acceleration will come go up and top speed how much will come down?

            I hope you are running on highways or good tarmac roads, otherwise lowering side profile means, you will have bumpy rides, more prone to damage to alloys, lesser traction on deep curves. I dont see much of effect on acceleration/pickup.

              ^ ++1

              The difference is marginal/negligible and also i doubt the availability of 100/70 or 90/80 tires..

              Go for sprocketing if u really want some better acceleration.

                Smaller tyres do not necessarily translate into better stability, they give better cornering and handling due to lesser rotational momentum. The Bullet IMO is one of the most stable bikes around, and it has a 19 inch tyre size!!

                Reducing the OD of the Tyre ( overall diameter ), will cause your bike to over read on the speedo, So it will become even more optimistic ( ie, if it was reading 80 before, now it will read 82-83 for the same speed ). Also as posted earlier, acceleration will improve, but marginally.

                Better idea is to go for a rear sprocket with maybe two teeth more, which will give you the acceleration you are looking for, but remember, at the cost of top speed, and fuel efficiency.

                My offerings to the gods of speed -

                - KTM Duke 200
                - Yamaha RXZ 5 speed
