  • Help Needed: Fitting a P220 Headlight inside the P180 fairing

    Hey Everybody,

The reflective coating in the existing headlight on my P180UG3 got burnt off (there's no silver portion left... it looks completely yellow from the front now) because I had fitted in an AM white-bulb in it... err.. it was fitted it in a way that it wasn't normal (Long story... lets cut to the chase, shall we ); and now I have to get the whole assembly replaced as it seems I have no alternative solution to the problem.

Now, I've always been wanting to combine the projector headlight from the P220 with my P180-UG3, without having to use P220's bulky fairing; now seems an opportune time to try out this experiment.

In simpler words, I plan to:
    a)
take out the complete headlight assembly (keeping the existing stock P180UG3 fairing in tact), and
    b)
house the headlight assembly from the P220 inside the P180's fairing.
The only questions in my mind are, can it be done? And, if yes, then how easily?

Now I am (sort of) well-versed with the headlight assembly in the P180UG3, i.e. I can open it up, change all 3 bulbs, indicators, fiddle with the wires, take off the entire assembly etc. by myself and then put it all back again without any glitches. However I have almost no clue of how the P220's assembly is fitted/housed.

Could someone please be kind enough to answer the following (assuming the first paragraph gets a 'Yes' ):
    a) Is the P220's headlight assembly, 'longer' as compared to the P180's? In the sense, would I have problems with it protruding outside the front of the fairing?
    b) Is there a special bracket to hold it on the P220? OR does the bracket only hold the fairing in which the headlight is fixed in the P220?
    c) What kind of changes would be required to the wiring/connections for this mod? I assume that since we've got separate bulbs for the high and low beams, the existing bulb holder from the P180UG3 would be useless here. (Correct me if I am wrong please.)
    d) Would one 35/35W bulb in each projectors be enough?
    e) Has anyone done this before ()?
    f) An approximation of the cost involved, including i) the P220 headlight, ii) Fitting it in -brackets/bolt holes et. al., iii) Wiring.

Any help with this experiment would be appreciated.

Well, the assembly costs nearly 4k bucks! You will need new holders (if the assembly does not come with it) and 35W with projectors will be dim. You will need 55W at least.

Hey, umm... I am not sure how the round headlamp would look on my bike especially since I have fitted the tank-scoops (like the ones on the P200, and the new P180UG4 -- BTW I had fitted them MUCH earlier than Bajaj thought about giving them to the P180 ).

Any ideas on how it the setup would look? Hey drvmtm, you mentioned someone using an 'extra lamp' on a P150. Is that dual-headlamp kind of setup? Could I see some pics if they're available please?

Thanks again for your help and please do keep the suggestions coming in.

Hey, BTW, isn't there a chance of the digital meter getting stolen if I get rid of the fairing? I've seen people discuss that somewhere around here but couldn't find the thread.

                      digital pod!!!

ya digital pod is a problem and you have to do some jugaad work to match it,trust me its not that heard to do.

yes p 150 of my friend is a ug2 mod,its having this kind of headlight setup with twin filament h4 lamp but he fixed it to low beam as it serves the purpose of spot lamp in highways and throw is much better even from a hella spot, trust me because its sheer size.i am usin same setup in my scorp m hawk with 90/100 bulbs(two actually)and fitted them in a manner that these can be operated in both hi and low beam.better light then the stock headlamp.

Hey thanks for that pic and the info drvmtm; i appreciate it. I umm... have some problem visualizing things from pics so couldn't actually get the drift of how the headlight would look on a Pulsar with the tank-shrouds on it, but thanks anyways for your help. Could you please shed some more light on the kind of jugaad i'll have to do in order to keep the meter safe from thieves?

Hey BTW, how does using another headlight shape instead of round, seem to you? And would it be feasible to procure something like that? well ,the pic of yamaha i showed u is having quite bulbous tank and its pretty closer to a pulsar tank with extesion.any way....

i belive the purpose of upgrading headlamp unit is to better light is?
the projecter setup is possible with only the inner reflecter part of 220 s on directly on front shocks but probs are

                          -price
                          -fitment,,quite a lot of jugaads
-fit and finish are not even close of acceptable terms
-as all things will be exposed so u will be invitin thievs to open up the thing 4k gone just like tat
-u need to change the coil to atleast avangr one to support 55 watt bulbs.
-wire cuttin needed so kiss the warrenty goodby if u have one.

personally i dont think its worth to go for, tats my opinion though,i respect every others also.

best combination for mid boggling light in easy convinient way round headlamp amby seal beam lucas one(its dammn nice, full glass)+avy coil+a fitment as shown in the follwing pic as it will cover the meter also.u can fabricate it from metal ,plasic etc.

Also other shapes are possible but the fit and finish and fitment remains a question a s u will not get original company made housin to fit the lamp.round one every nut bolt is available from bajaj part s bean.
twin lamp set up is also interesing as shown below.one lamp for low beam other for high beam if u use 55/60 lamp
or both with avy coil 35 w bulbs, though there will be some dimming

Thanks for your good help Drvmtm; I truly appreciate it. I think the dual setup looks good, but will be tough since -like you said- the fitting would be a bit difficult since I'll have to search for parts myself. In any case, I will have to use something to cover the meter so as to save it from thieves. Excellent inputs. Thanks a lot again. In case you have any more ideas to share, please pour them in to this thread and oblige.

I will also be on the lookout for some time for more inputs from other members as well before I decide on what I'd like to do to the bike.
