  • [Help]: Disposal of used Engine Oils.

Guys, I thought of changing the engine oil from next time. Till now I have changed only in Service center or the local mechanic. I'm not sure whether the local mechanic will be disposing the used engine oil in a proper manner (or environmental friendly). I just want to know whether is there any proper way of disposing the used engine oil. I dont want to flush it in the drainage or any other stuff. If I can dispose it in a proper way it will be good for the environment. Already the smoke polluted our place to some extent.

    Need your valuable suggestions guys,

Most of the mechanics or svc's dont flush the oil. If they have more quantity of used oil then they sell it cause most of the heavy duty machines require used oil to work. Others who have smaller quantity of used oil they use it to lubricate chain etc mostly the oil in not just thrown because it is usable.

quite a prompt answer by TPAM

you can also keep it for the same....lubricate your chain, or just pass it on to the mech, or the cycle repair wala

Thanks guys.. I actually thought it will be flushed to the drainage both by the service center and local mechanic.

I have 5 cans of used oil with me still , I dint want to throw them but giving off to a mechanic might be making him to use that oil for other bikes so I dint take that option.

Any other way of safe disposal of oil?

Do not use it to lube the chain! I can't think of any use an avg. person will have for used oil. Know that it is extremely poisonous and carcinogenic. Do not let it come in contact with skin or environment. The best thing you can do is to take it to one of the bigger automobile service centers and request them to add it to thier used oil container. Make sure to ask them what they do with the used oil. Mostly they sell it to companies who recycle it, use it for paints, etc. It is likely to come back to you as spurious oil also! But that can't be helped, and its a far lesser evil than disposing it anywhere else. They will mostly not have any issue of taking the oil off your hands as they sell the free oil they will be getting from you.

This is also what I do - I collect it in a can and once a year or so, empty it at the car service center's used oil container, when the car goes to the SC.

+1 to what jasmeetsinghchawla&Raccoon said: The best way is to give it to the SVC guys, I enquired with them on Saturday when I was getting my bike serviced, they said they sell it to the factories for their heavy duty machines.
