  • Gearbox comparison between electra 4s n 5s??

    Hey bikers.

My first post here. A question which has boggled me for a long time is that is there any difference between the gearbox of electra 4s n 5s. Many old timers like my dad,his friends, some ol'school mechanics etc. say that 4s gearbox is much superior to 5s. They say that the 5s gearbox starts giving trouble over a long period as compared to 4s. I'm not sure if its a generation thing where they favour the right foot gear shift or what.. m confused..more so coz one of my buddy's pal is not satisfied with the 5s he bought a yr n half ago. He says the gearshifting is giving some trouble now. he is planning to sell it off n buy a STD or 4s.

With due respect to your dad, his friends and old school mechs, it should be the other way round. The 5S gearbox was developed in the UK specially for RE. Meanwhile, motorcyclists in the UK ditched the 4S's ratios with revised ratios for better acceleration. The 5S GB is a further evolved version of this design. The ratios on the 4S have a yawning gap between the 3rd and 4th gears. RE solved this issue with the 5S. The 5S also seals better -> this explains why RE recommends EP90 gear oil for the 5S whereas a mixture of oil and grease for the 4S. The gearbox on the 5S is much superior to that of the 4S. Period.

      Cheers,

      Jay

        Hey Saran,

I would have to agree with Jay on the facts as listed on paper but then it's not that big a difference on road that one can be called superior to the other. The gear ratios as Jay has rightly said are better spaced out in the 5s compared to the 4s & it does use a gear oil & it has an extra seal to prevent leakage around the kick starter (as opposed to the 4s) but then a 5s gearbox does not shift any smoother than the 4s & is just as much good or bad or reliable as the 4s.

So, I think you can safely choose the option that suits you best & that your heart desires.

        Take care.

        Happy thumping,
        Prakhar

The gear box is the same on the Std and 4s.
The gear ratios on the 4s are widespread
whereas in 5s they are short.
Both the gear boxes are mated with the same engine..

You will find better accelaration on the 5s when compared to the 4s n Std.
