  • Help: Chasis replacement after Bike accident

    Hi,
My bike skid on gravel after front locked on applying hard brake as some bugger came from wrong side of the narrow road.

    Main damage:
    1. complete head light assembly.
    2. Tank
    3. crash guard bent
    4. Chassis.

dropped it at service center and asked to file insurance.just yesterday evening came to know, that Chassis was also gone. and it will take some time.

I tried to google around for chassis replacement cases, but could found very littel. The service center guy said, the chassis will come from company. And insurance surveyor has insisted to have a new number on chassis instead of getting the old number only on chasis.

the catch is, that new number would mean, re-registration at RTO. which would cost me 2,000 bucks. which insurance company won't pay .. this is apart from total estimate of around 14K, from which i will only get 40-50% for plastic parts..

    now two main queries.
    1. why get a new number on chassis and not get the old one only? and how much time it takes for new chasis to come.
    2. Does it cost close to 2,000 for re-registration when RTO tax is allready paid.

    mine is P150/ rED/ UG3/ 1.3 YEARS OLD.

If the chasis are not broken then i ve seen people who remove bends using hydraulic methods. Donno how exactly. If you buy a new chasis then the number will come along with chasis, u can't print them (legally) but u can get old number printed is some places.

I ve saw doing that specially for Old Cars while replacing engines they print the engine number of old engine

Your service center guy is rite, the insurance company will not pay you until the bike is re-registered with the RTO, which means you're in trouble. This is because its a lenghty process to get a new chassis number from the RTO. First coz it will take some time for the repairs to be carried out, then the surveyor will come and check and will pass it for registration, only after its registered will he file for your reimbursement. Maybe you could get in touch with an RTO agent to speed up the process but even then it will take some time.

If the chassis is not broken, then why dont you get it relaigned/straightened, the work wil not be 100% perfect but will save you all the hassles. The other option as someone mentioned is to get the old number printed, but that is ILLEGAL and should not be done if your claiming insurance as it could land u in a Soup.

1> As per rule whenever a chassis is replaced, the changes have to be made in the RC book as new chassis means new chassis number. This would drop your resale value to some extent. Time taken for a new chassis to arrive depends on availability, should take 10 days max as yours is a new model.

2> Cant comment on the price but i feel it would be on the higher side of 2K which would be inclusive of palm greasing, hope you know what i mean.

Can you explain the extent of damage to the chassis. Try fixing it by welding. This would save a lot of time and money.

well.. thanks for all the responces guys..

First thing, chasis is not bent.. but there seems to be a break between the road going below handel (I guess fork goes there)..

second thing, I use the bike for weekend rides.. and seriously do some ripping.. around 500KM every alternate weekend.. wouldn't be taking any chances with welding thing..

Even the service center guy is saying, getting chasis fixed is possible.. but if you face any probs, it wouldn't be covered in insurance then.. I think , lets better get the damn thing changed..

RTO charges are definitly a burn in my pocket.. But I wanted to know, is this really that much.. means tax is already paid.. reregistering in same state.. smart card charges.. 250.. other small 50 odd bucks.. max total should be 500.. where I am giving those extra 1500.. .. anyways..

Anyone else got the chassis changed?? and can through some gyan on this..

it would be absolute insanity to risk fixing the current damaged chassis. Get the new chassis, get the total cost of repairs confirmed in writing from the showroom and give it to the insurance people during inspection. The new chassis number should ideally be reflected in the RTO records.
