  • Implementing Electronic Starter for HH Sleek

    Hi All,

My Dad is having an early 90s Hero Honda Sleek (can't remember the exact year). He's now arround 64 and still rides his bike. The kick of the bike is pretty hard and now it has started giving Dad some acute leg pain!!

I tried talking him into selling of the bike and buy an electric start scooter for himself, but he's not ready to let the bike go!! Well it's for sure I got my bike crazy genes from him

Well guys one thought I got in my mind is, to have an Electric Starter system go in for the bike and therefore I would need inputs from you guys as to what kinds of mods would be required and above all what would be the durability of such a mod as the bike, even though very well maintained is ages old. One thing I know for sure, that the existing Hero Honda CD Dawn is on the same platform as the sleek as all the spares of CD Dawn (except for the body parts) are a straight fit on the sleek including the eletrical wirings.

So, friends please provide your suggestions as I seriously want to have a detail insite on how we can go ahead with implementing an Electric Starter for the HH Sleek.....!!

    Waiting eagerly for your suggestions.

Its sure gonna be expensive and not 100% reliable as well.
If you are ready to shell out enough cash, try out getting the entire engine which has self start and put that whole engine (except for base which holds engine nmbr) including self start.

Thou what i said sound stupid and expensive, it will be reliable. You can get a Hero Honda Street (with self start) for less than 5-6k (full bike). Get hold of a proper mech and see how you can make use of it.

Thanks Shreeni for your suggestions. My Dad says, the only stupid ideas are the ones which you don't say!! So, you idea makes a lot of sense and actually is a good one and is definitely one of the options we can try.

Actually, I was also thinking that doing this might be costly and there might be reliability issue. Actually I wanted to know what all mods would be required, so that we can discuss in detail with mechanics and come to some solution

IMO. You need the wiring harness of the new Passion, that comes with electric start. Also since the crankcase is more or less same. the crank case outer will have to be replaced, which holds the starter motor and the gear. Also the internal gear would have to be changed, to accomodate the starter motor gear.

The switchgear and battery would have to be changed, but, it would be worth the effort. I would give it a budget cost of about 10-15k, if you can source the components.

My offerings to the gods of speed -

            - KTM Duke 200
            - Yamaha RXZ 5 speed

The HH sleek and the CD dawn are based on the same platform so the CD 100 parts can be used on the sleek. The mod should be carried out by a good experienced mech and everything should be fine. I recently came across one such person here in mumbai who had done this mod nearly 10 years back on his CD 100 (first version) and is using the bike till date. He proudly says " i had an electric start bike even before HH launched its CBZ with ES". When enquired about the pricing, he quoted around 8k for the entire setup.
The parts changed mentioned by him were.
                1) Switch gear
                2) Battery
                3) Rectifier
                4) Wiring Harness
                5) Casing modification to accomodate the motor.( I guess the new CD 100s casing will fit)
                6) Some internal gear for the starter motor
                7) Starter Motor. Etc etc.

I would say go in for the mods only if budget permits. Spending so much on an old bike does'nt make sense. I guess for your dad the bike bears a lot of sentimental value, so would suggest u to keep it and buy another one (with SS) as well.

Thanks Ripper for sharing the info!! That was very precise and gives a clear pictures of what's required to be done!!

Yeah the price is comming out arround the same in my home town too, when my Dad enquired with the details mentioned by you and JD!! Guess we need to think of other options too.... coz the price of the mods are pulling us back
