  • Problems in Bullet Electra 2004

    Model - Bullet Electra 2004
Year of Purchase - 2004 in bangalore
    Odometer - 19000+odd
Service - All recomended service done. Ouil changed every 300 Km and more.

Service Centre 1 - Teknik Motors, Indiranagar, Bangalore
Service centre 2 - Soniya Bullet, Bhandup, Mumbai

I have some inherent problems in my bike right from the day of purchase. Numerous visits and spends in the aforesaid service stations have not resolved them.

I request all bullet gurus and enthusiats to please help me in this. I have some time and money to spend and I want to repair my bike to the glory it is worth of. I shall take my bike anywhere in and around Mumbai if anyone wants to have a look at it.

    Help needed! please:

    Problems -

    1. Engine / Gearbox -

    a) Noise - The engine gives out mechanical rubbing noise. This should
be common on electras, but after 20000 Odd km, should it not have
reduced? The STD 350s have such a nice smooth engine, the engine noise
is barely audible at low RPMs. In my case, the rider don't hear the exhaust note at all. However, the exhaust note is there and is very clearly audible to the pillion.

When I bought the bike, Tecknik Motors folks said it will reduce after 10k KM on the odo, but here is 20K and it's still all noisy.

    b) Heat - I am sure that my engine overheats. It starts nice and smooth
in the morning but within 5-6KM of stop and go, it gets really hot. I can feel it in my legs.
The STD 350s run a lot cooler in same kind of traffic.

    c) Adjustable Cam Spindle - I used to have very high tappet sound issue. The tappet would stay silent for varely 20km after adjustment and then back. So, the service guys installed the Adjustable Cam Spindle (from T-Bird). This stoppped the tappet sound totally. After every service, I pestered the guys to adjust the spindle (Somehow, they don't want to do it). This made the bike run cooler and silent for about 200 odd kilometers. After that, it's back to its noisy hot nature.

    d) Spark Plug attachment - I bought a spark plug attachment from a petrol pump. It was some kind of coil which was to be fitted serially with the spark plug. This surely had a great effect on my heating and noise issue. I had it for about six months. Then some smart reared mechanic at the service centre simply threw it out! Back to old story again.

    e) Jerky accelaration - The accelaration is very jerky, upto 50 kmph. The pick up isn't bad or so I think. But with every throttle input, the bike kind of jerks up and pushes ahead. Similarly, retardation/ engine braking also is very jerky. Releasing the throttle all the way also have a jerking efect on the bike (as if it has hit a brick on the road - except the jump). I have goten the clutch overhauled twice already - no resolution.

    2. Suspension/ Tyres -

    a) Wobbling - The bike wobbles every now and then, especially after hitting a pot hole or rough patch at speed (any speed). It feels like that the rear wheel has gone out of alignment. I have gotten rear wheel opened and fitted 100 times, no help. I have gotten the tyres out of rim and refitted also, no help.Instead, leaving the bike parked for 2/3 hours always takes care of it. After the rest, it runs properly in a straight line.

    b) Front tyre grip - The front has disk breaks. It skids on loose pebbles even if breaked mildly. Should I change to radial tyres in the front? What are the options?

It would be really nice if someone points me to some threads here or elsewhere were such problems are discussed. Also contact info of some reliable mechanics in Mumbai (Central suburbs will be double help) where I can get my things done will be great.

For Noise and heat, did U check if ur oil pump is perfect. I had this issue when my 85 model bull's oil pump malfunctioned.
For jerky acceleration, did you ve this issue right from the start or after 20K kms. If after 20K then check ur chain/sprockets. Since you get it while decelaration, I suspect this could be the issue.
For spark plug, NGK spark plugs would help.

The problem is there since beginning. Upon asking the service center folks always pointed a clutch issue, but the could never resolve it.

On Chain and Sprocket - During first 4/5 months of my ownership, I got my chain damager by a jumpy stone. I got my chain replaced under warranty. But this jerky issue had been there from before and was there after chain replacement. I have never gotten my sprocket checked though.

                  Back to the Game

So, It has been two years since I raised this query.
The response had been overwhelming and I faultered. Got a bad one in the leg and the bike had to be kept parked for most of the period. Got to get a spin only when another bulleteer would be so kind to kick start it for me and accompany me for the ride. :-)

Now I am back to the game with fully functional legs. And I want the bullet to be a bullet now.

Along with the issues mentioned on the thread, I want a sound like this -

Bullet 350 Reving Noise - YouTube

                  What do I do?

Hi Buddy, Thanks for your advice. I have given my bike to Sekhar Anna A.K.A Mucchad for complete service. He has given me an estimate of about Rs. 10,000/-.
The break up is here -

                      1. Water Wash - 150

                      2. Full Lock set with Petrol tank cover - 750

                      3. Switch Net (My ignition key was loose, I think this is the inside part of the ignition key) - 110

                      4. Full Cable Set (accelerator, clutch, speedometer etc) - 335

                      5. Air Filter - 200

                      6. Air Filter Box - 900

                      7. Indicator Light (4) - 650

                      8. Tail Light (New classic type) - 250

                      9. Number plate (the plates are bent, he'll straighten them up and repaint) - 300

                      10. Short Bottle Silencer (Indore) - 1800

                      11. Mirrors (2) - 450

                      12. Petrol Tap (Metal type, the electra has this hangy plastic bottle with platic tap kind of thing. I have meaning to replace it for last 7 years) - 200

                      13. Seat Modification (Will do some metal work on the seat frame and re-stitch the seat cover - the seat height will be lowered by 1.5 inches approx) - 450 (for metal work) + 350 (for stiching and stuff)

                      14. LHS Switch Gear - 525

                      15. Oil (3 Liters) - 875

                      16. Oil Filter - 40

                      17. Engine Block painting (and will add some kind of a sleeve type of thing where the bend pipe connects to engine block. This will help in some heat related matter which will prevent my bend pipe from getting browning. It's quite brown now, so I took it) - 150

                      18. Paste (for some cleaning etc) - 45

                      19. Brake Shoes - 85

                      20. Air filter rubber (there was no connection between the air filter in the triangular box and the air filter in the square box. He said there should be a rubber pipe) - 90

                      21. One straight bar type crash guard - 750

                      A total of Rs. 9370/-.

How do these prices loook? Is he overcharging me for something? Please help.

These prices are a bit too much. You should've picked up all the spares urself and handed over to him.His work is damn impressive but charges are sky rocket.Has he started the work yet??

He has started some minor work, not the big ones.
My deal with him is if I can find certain lower prices, I can bargain his head off. I have done that in the past.

So, I need some guidance on the proper pricing. Then I'll pay him as much.

Edit: - On a second thought, I may not cut his corners. If he's a good mechanic, he won't work at road side rates of course. Let him take his margin... all I want is a good job.

I would recommend you to go get the engine oil urself.Bcuz ive seen these mechanics using some crap HP engine oil @ 170/- p/l and sumtimes Castrol too.Castrol has got many duplicate products running in the market and im damn sure u dont want an fake oil screweing up ur engine.Go for Motul 7100 20w50.Thicker grades work well with bullet. It's cost is bit on the higher side Rs700/- but its really worth it and above all its fully synthetic.
Let me know if u have problems getting this oil

OK, This is a sound piece of advice.
As I see that you reside in Mulund area, could you please suggest me a place to buy this oil?
The work has just started on the external stuff. Oil change will be a later item. So, I can buy the oil and give to Mucchad. I am a frequent visitor of Sarvoday Nagar. Does anyone stock it there?
