  • Run-in query

hey guys i got a query,
my p220 dtsi is in run-in condition (300 kms completed)
n im following the run-in rules of not ripping the bike more than 50kmph,n some times a sudden burst upto 64kmph( very rarely) only while overtaking.
Since its my new bike, i went to my college ,there my friends took my bike..as since they were my friends could not warn thm bout not ripping it...it feels awkward!
they rippd my bike till 121 kmph...105 kmph ..110 kmph....
so its like my bike crossed 100 ..3-4 times.
    did tht harm my engine?

Short bursts are nearly about OK! for the engine. would not have harmed it.Do try in future to not give bike to anyone else till run-in is completed.

I completely agree with Abhi... Dont Give your bike to any one till the un-in is completed.Try to be Under 40 Kmph till the first service... This is the period where your machine gets refined ..... .

There can be some problems coming up during initial days Keep those things noted down... For Eg Hard Gear Shift, Too tight clutch, Head light not on position.. blah blah blah.. note it down and while giving for service tell them these are the problems you facing.... You can got thru the service manual to get an idea about the servicing

          Hope this helps...

just see he doesnt fiddle wid ur carb...check the discs for sounds, clean the airfilter..vibrations...adjust your beams if you find it too high...check the brake fluid, oiling of chain...see if he poured correct level of oil quantity

i m about to cross 500 km mark on my ODO,n cz f my exams i cant take my bike for 1st servicing now, can i rev my bike w/o d 1st servicing till 60-65 kmph?
cz riding a p220 on highways with speed of 50kmph is really a sad thought..i can see splendours n tvs star city overtaking me!!

it is a good thing to start putting load on the engine during the 500 to 1000 km run. it pushes the piston rings against the liner and improves compression.

i mean going about 50~70% throttle opening in high gears. or riding with a pillion. start doing it gradually and not all the time.

going to high rpms once a while will not harm even a new engine and its actually advisable to take it up the revs once a while. but keeping high rpms and downshifting at high rpms is not advisable.

the modern engines dont need to be babied too much. the first thing most manufacturers do when they put an engine together, is rip it under load to max rpm in all gears... to test it.

                  so dont worry.

                  a personal observation...
both me and my cousin had got p180s about the same time. i babied my engine a lot and my cousin had opened the taps much earlier. his engine was always much more powerfull and my engine was always a bit smoother.
                  your choice.

                  cheers
                  Abhishek

I've seen on TV where car like Ferrari, Corvette etc. engine are put through tests. But I highly doubt that a small capacity econimical mass production motorcycles are subjected to similar standard. However I do agree modern engine are much better engineered and does not have to be "babied too much".
