  • Mystery Jargon: Usable reserve

    Hi,

could someone explain about the term "Usable reserve". What's up with the un-usable reserve, is it completely unusable, or you can use it by tilting the bike towards the left side (the fuel pipe is on left side, and some fuel would be left on the right side of the tank...)

the only answer i could find on this topic was @ http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/267378-post1147.html

    Thanks

Most unusable reserve can be used by tilting the bike. The reason for this unusable reserve is the frame of the most indian bikes and it stays on the right side of the tank.

        Thanks for the reply.

Does that means that on a long run, considering you never use the un-usable reserve on the Right side of the tank, that fuel would be the debris, water content, and other liquids (which are heavier that petrol), which are gonna get accumulated there .... Does that cause rusting or other problems... using that fuel would be really bad for the carb and engine too... Rite ???

BTW: xBhp rocks!!! Its like a Vehicle-oPedia

The fuel itself is completely miscible, so the unusable reserve won't really have stagnant fuel.

But, like you said, water and other debris does get accumulated there and the bottom will have slight corrosion. The corrosion is probably more like a stain rather than compromised structural integrity.

I guess if you actualy able to get the debris into the fuel line it would be bad, but there is also a fuel strainer. Im not sure if all bikes have it.

Also, the unusable reserve saves the bike from the problem of vapour-lock !
