  • [Help]: Pulsar 220 Owners

    Hey guys i am owning a pulsar 220 DTSi My engine gets hot at a short ride too i am not satisfied with the oil cooled (radiator) technology I am thinking of putting samll fans on the radiator for effective cooling!
    Please tell me if this can be done!
    I have attached the pic of the fan i am talking abt!

      First check with your Probiking guys. If it is getting abnormally hot, then you can make claims regarding warranty!

        you must be running very lean dude...whats your mileage??running lean will cause a hot engine and prolongated periods will lead to piston defect...check your AFR

          @chaman : don't do this, it will have drastic effect on engine oil temperature that goes back to engine from the cooler....

            @the threadstarter:

            1. How old is your 220?
            2. Has it been run in properly?
            3. Have you checked the oil level and is it the proper grade of oil?
            4. You may feel that it is hot but it mite be absolutely normal for the engine. Is your ETS warning on?

            Let us know..

                    AFR is Air-Fuel Ratio.. Determines whether your engine is running lean or rich... Running lean means, there is less fuel in the mixture, which is being sent for combustion... therefore more heat produced and usually fetches higher mileage. running rich is where more fuel is there in the mixture, though keeps the engine from overheating but affects your top end... the AFR must be neither too rich nor too lean for optimum performance.

                    Get your carb tuned and plugs checked in the next service... and what grade engine oil have you changed to?

                      @vipin_s:
                      Why will it have a drastic effect?
                      The oil circulated through the oil cooler is meant to be cooled. The fan will help cooling of the oil by blowing more volume of cool air on to the radiator. Isn't the coolant in LC systems cooled using a Fan on the radiator??
                      Cooling the engine oil will not give the engine a thermal shock as you may be thinking.It will only help lubrication and cooling. When the oil cools it regains its original viscosity. So that will be beneficial now wouldn't it?

                      @topic starter:
                      If you feel the engine is getting overheated, take it to the probiking guys and get the Air fuel ratio checked.IMO its just you who's feeling that the bike's running hot. I've been there. If you are running a new bike you are bound to feel it heating up. If the oil levels are right and the oil is of the proper grade then I don't think there would be any problem. Still to be sure, don't wait for the next service. Take the bike to the service station. And if at all you go ahead with installing the fans, make sure you take them off before you take your bike to the service station, else the service people will start whining about warranty issues and all.

                        Thanks Pavan

                        I'll be going for my next service soon I don't know about the grade the PBK guys have changed it the oil level is ok if the problem is not solved then i'll be fit those fans
                        I have seen a comet with similar fans fitted on the radiator!

                          Chaman, if ur bike is 45 days old & going for FIRST SERVICE, the question of engine overheating/ "not satisfied with the oil cooler" does not arise. i took delivery of my P 220 Fi in Hyderabad, rode it for 500 KM, done the 1 st free service there & came to my city (450 km from Hyderabad) in under 9 hours, almost non stop. the speed maintained is around 60-70 kph. i never faced the engine heating up problem. now my bike is 5500 km old, and most of the time the bike is ripped continuously for 4 to 5 hrs non-stop for above 200 km rides.
                          the theory of providing a fan/cooler to a Radiator (for oil or water cooling) is that the fan should force more air than the air hitting the cooler face while the bike is traveling. if u ever fit those "cooling fans" before the oil cooler, (i am sure the fan u showed in the picture is an SMPS/Micro Processor cooling unit of a PC) even the fan is running at its full speed, after the bike reach speeds over 30-40 kph, the on coming air hitting the fan can turn it faster than it can turn !!. i hope u understood it. so abandon the idea which is purely cosmetic IMO.
                          But there is an option which is too complicated for fitting on a P 220. u can connect the fans through a thermostat which triggers them when the bike is traveling at low speeds (like bumper to bumper traffic) and the thermostat unit should be carefully set to a pre-set temperature to start the fans. and as soon as the speed picks up, the oil cooler gets the desired air, then the thermostat should stop the fans.

                            frank we agree with u...i atleast do...but one more option.... y not go for a bigger radiator ? r15's radiator, a comet's radiator.. forget the fan part...all we want is optimum cooling and more surface area for the oil to cool.... but are our oil pumps powerful enough to circulate oil through a bigger radiator ?

                              - The fan wont work.. as in the airflow wont be adequate... Unless you get a really high CFM fan..

                              - Since your bike is in the running in phase.. some high temps are normal... As long as the bike is not sputtering or the spark plug color has not changed ( you will have to get it checked at a Service centre.
