  • Pulsar 180 (Classic - 2001) - Engine Compression Queries

    Hi Friends,

I have Pulsar 180cc (2001 Model) and have been enjoying it thoroughly from last 8 years. In recent time i have started feeling that engine compression has gone down. My reasons are

    1. Pickup has dropped significantly, feels more like 100cc bike
    2. Mileage has gone down
    3. It requires less force to kick start the bike.

Bike has done over 50K (I use motul v300fl), and i am assuming the engine needs overhaul.

    a. Could you kindly help me in understanding about what are the symptoms of low compression?
    b. How to check compression if there is no dyno facility available.
    c. What has to be done rectify the compression issue?
    d. How much does it cost ?

Feel free to pour in any additional information that you think would be helpfull.
Thanks and wish you a very happy and prosperous new year 2010

    Viny

Kick going down in compression is a sure sign. Check if the bike gives out white smoke when the engine is revved.

To rectify it, you will need an engine overhaul. Valves, piston, rings, cylinder replacements are needed.

well i too got my engine overhauled, mine is the dtsi 2004 model and i hadn't faced any problem but it was due to engine seizure..I got everything replaced and it costed me 7k.The 180s pistons don't get replaced instead a new block is installed(rs 1700 INR) and you may need new clutch plates(rs 600) and a new timing chain nd gear(rs 400).bdw my bike had clocked around 85k by that time..

@coffin_on_wheels: You nick really makes me ROFL. Reminds me of an old hindi movie in which there was a coffin that had wheels below it and use to roll arround.

Comming back to topic, why would timing chain and clutch plates need any replacements. I think they are doing there job without much of issues. My initial thoughs are that probably the piston rings have gone kaput.

I am trying to collect all the needfull information before heading to mech, so that i am not fooled or cheated upon.

                Thanks for your support.

Your bike has done 50k and obviously your timing chain and clutch has worn out too. To take the increased torque from the new piston you need to replace them too. Whats the use of getting a new engine when its power cant reach drive efficiently.

And you dont exactly need to replace the block, take ur bike to an expert/pro, he will bore the block for setting up a 0(zero) number piston. It would be hard to get an original piston, but some are available that are as good as stock pistons. I'd advice you to replace valves too.

I own a p180v1 too and got the entire job done in something around Rs 3k.
It included piston and rings + valves + clutch + timing chain + some more itsy bitsy stuff i dont exactly remember + labour charges.

@Harmeet: Thanks pal , I have made needfull replacement of clutch, pressure plates, chain sprocket as an when needed. But yes the internal engine was never worked upon.

Also could you enlighten me about, why do we need to do reboring? I though regular wear and tear would make bore size larger? Is is due to carbon deposits?

Also is it better to take it to castrol bike zone as compared to Service Center. I have less trust of service center guys, given that they have 100 monkeys running arround with just handfull of skilled mechs, who are so overloaded that they would barely work, most of there time goes away in helping the monkeys. Castrol bike zone gives good customer care but they are costly too when there are lot of works to be done. What do you guys suggest.

Also how do you differenciate between genuine and duplicate engine parts? Does anyone knows which company manufactures the piston, rings, valves etc etc?

Reboring is not recommended but its cheaper. It makes the cylinder one size bigger and then you have to go for an oversize piston. Much better to replace the cylinder/piston with OEM kits.

                        Sorry for the OT.

I suggest instead of reboring get a new bore n piston.

Boring is done to incorporate a larger piston and to get a new cleaner surface inside a block.
Yes going to castrol is a good option, they will definitely charge more but they are more skilled and work professionally.
Buy the part from an authorized dealer or someone you can trust, going by the level of scams these days thats the only way to differentiate.

Wats the harm. You do get better performance.

^^ Only harm is that it does not long much more than say 10k kms. But its cheaper. So, good as a stop gap measure.

                              Confused

                              1. Why reboring and using large size piston, why not use same size new piston, considering the piston has worn out?
                              2. If its both piston and bore is worn out, then how and where do I get oversize piston? Does oversize piston exists for every motorcycle brand or its just that pulsar has a family from 150 to 220?
                              3. If i go for oversize piston? What are pro's and con's of same? Does it anyway help in increasing CC/BHP and mileage ?
                              4. I am having Pulsar classic, with single spark plug, does that makes any difference, given that most probably i will not get the piston for classic version rather it would of DTSI version.
