  • Rust in Petrol Tank

    Hi Everyone,

I had a sad experience from my Pulsar, for the past 2 days I can smell the presence of pertol when I was about to take the bike from parking but I neglected, thinking that, some dust or anything got clogged in the carb or so and hence the smell. I had that experience too, once I made a tank ful of purchase and parked in front of a mall and left, when I came back, I saw the colour of the floor was changed and I found that the petrol was flowing continously thru the pipe under the carb. Half of the tank was gracfully emptied by the syphon mode Even Pulsar had another trend of overflowing when the bike is parked on a low position or tilted to side ways to a particular angle.

Ok coming back to the point, last week I saw some blistering on the tank and my mech made some scrubbing and put some Zinc Chrome Yellow primer coat and told me there r some rust on the tank, next service need to paint the rusty areas. But yesterday I had a front tyre puncture and the puncture wala told me that petrol is leaking, and he pointed it too. Bottom of the tank thru another blistering, its leaking drop by drop. When closely observed, I could see more on the places last time patch painted areas too. I've'nt made even a single scratch on the tank, thats the way I takes care of it, but my tank is rusting

My mech too smart to overcome this, he took a Mseal mix and pasted everywhere and give my bike back, leaving an advice of its better to get it replaced as its already blisters costing another 4K or so. I dont mind in spending for that, but what is the remedy for this getting rusted? I had the similar experiences in my old Samurai too. How come tank is getting rusted, when its always fully immerced in petrol, and one more thing, rust is only on the bottom part where the tank sheets are joined together Does petrol have a rusting agent? Does a anodizing work will help?

I expect everyone in this forum come up with your share to tackle this issue as it can happpen any bike, and will adversly affect the paint jobs if we try to gas weld or so. What are the peventive measures to be taken, and how to isolate it from rust if its already there but in an early stage etc..

Even I had the same problem with my old HH Splndr. The mechanic did some acid wash or something like to get rid of it. I was lucky bcz the hole was on the seat side corner so we could gas weld it deliberatly and was not seen from outside. AFAIK, once you gas weld the tank, the coating will come off, so its become more prone to rusting. Dude, are you from a coastal area? Coastal areas are more prone to rusting trends, so I would suggest you to change the tank as well as your house too

My mechanic says there is no remedy for this and its due to aging and salt presence in coastal areas. He also said some colloquial jargons to get rid of this rusty which I cant remember Anyway Mseal paste will do for another couple of months or till another blister pop ups, and stock a full box of Mseals with your tool kit too.

Yeah me too from a coastal area, not too far, just a 4 kms from the sea shore may be thats the reason. Rossifan, if u could give me a residence free of cost, I dont mind in changing my residence too.

Dude, I travel through heart of the city, so Mseal availability is no problem, I hope its from ur experience as u may be from some mountain side

Right, when u gas weld the anodizing will come off, so more prone to rust. But is already infested with this so whats the point?

Same opinion from most of my friends with 5 yr+ old bikes. So its a very common I hope. So does it have any prevention or remedy?

Cmon guys lets have ur share of informations in this.

            Sniper Says

The water vapour form the air in the tank condenses every night and collects at the bottom as water is heavier than petrol (which explains why the bottom rusts more than the rest of the tank). this problem is more in humid climates like coastal regions for obvious reasons. the pulsar tank or the fuel cock allows fuel flow from slightly above the very bottom of the tank to prevent water entering the carb, this in turn traps the water inside & accelerates the corrosion. Only solution to this is the keep the tank atleast 3/4ths full at all times as more the air= more water vapour=more water=more rusting.

Sniper, thanks for sharing the info, but my tank capacity is 18lts and carrying almost full tank really affects the stability of the bike on harsh brakings, so I used to keep the tank less than half.

BTW, what r the preventive measures to be taken for this? Empty and make it clean once in every quarter? Any chem treatments? like acid wash or so?
