  • Honda Unicorn, Starting Problem.

    All,
    I am using a Unicorn bought in a 1st slot in 2004 and pretty satisfied with the performance. My birdie is a kick start(obviously, Self start models was not introduced till jan05) and I do face starting problems quite a times, (it makes a sound like "
    whoup" n stops while driving) the strange thing is that after keeping on kicking for 30-40 mins. it refuses to start (leaving pains n sometimes swelling in my leg). It dont even make any (engine or ignition) sound while kicking assuring it'll start.
    In such case, most of the times, I do park it in the nearby parking slot and get back to kicking after finishing work, the most surprising thing is that it starts in just a haft kick only.
    This behavior is so intermittent and I reported this problem(several times) at service centers but they dint found any issues like this with the same bike.

    Any help?

    Thanks... Nir

      My take is to first check the spark plug and the plug contacts. Carbon deposits on the plug and electrode distance variation can make the spark plug very unreliable and prone to starting problems. Change the spark plug if required. Iridium plugs may not necessarily be the best all the time and I have had starting problems with my iridium. Check with normal Champion plugs. They have worked best for me.

        hi nir.u did not mention how many kms ur bike did till now? as it is of 04 model it has been 6yrs.i too own a unicorn of 07 model.as ours are 150 cc they produce high heat.u need to change spark plug and airfilter for every 10-12000km.
        and coming to tht sound check airfilter manifold and carb to engine manifold for any cracks.as they r made up of rubber they damage due to heat and also by time. finally wat u need to do is..
        1.change those manifolds.
        2.change sparkplug and filter element.
        3.and clean the carb thouroughly mainly the jest and thr holes and re tune the carb.and u wil get rid of this prblm.

        need to chenge manifold: if thr is any leakage frm the manifolds the engine suction does not get in to the carb and leaks out whn u kick it for more time some of the sucktion is done and the fuel enters the engine and thn make it to start very quickly..

          I couldn't have given such a technical answer..... too technical for me.

            @Prajwal:
            Yeah the plug has been replaced 2 times (but not sure whether its iridium or champion one)till today, and I face the same issue even with the new plug in the place.

            @Satya:
            Its has completed ~15000Kms a day back and today only I gave it for servicing, the solution you suggested is a bit technical for me but still I got the points on which I need to take care on. I am not sure about whether the carb and manifold checkings been done at the time of routine servicing, do I need to tell these things explicitly?

            @Both :
            I am really thankful a lot for all ur suggestions, I will work out with service guys on those. and will get back to you in a week about the results. Thanks a lot.

              Don't expect the svc guys to permanently fix the problem for sure. Take it to an experienced mechanic for a 2nd opinion.

                Ohh, Is that so?
                It was like I never let any mechanic to touch my bike apart from service center guys only. N this moment itself those guys are working on it. I'll see ahead with the suggestions you gave earlier still if those wont work will surely get help of some good mechanic in city. Thanks..

                  urs is only 15000kms done and u r facing starting prblm....tht is really very bad.mine it completed 25000kms and im really happy wit my bike.the thng is tht i nvr give my bike to showroom service.as im my self an automobile engr i do it all my self.u better use mico bosch spark plugs and maintain correct plug gap(refer ur manual to the gap).u need not to change the manifolds.
                  1.remove ur plug and insert the plug cap to the plug and make the threads of the plug touch the body of the vehicle and crank the vehicle,u wil find blue spark at the tip of the plug if it so thn it means tht ur bike sparking good.so, thr is no prblm in ignition.
                  2.one more thng is tht throttle up ur vehicle 4000+rpm and check for white smoke at the silencer exhaust.(white smoke shud not come).if so ur bike needs engine overhaul or piston rings replacement.
                  3.check the carb and retune it carefully and also even check the timing chain for correct timing.consult any castrol bike zone for good work.honda service is not so good here in hyd.but thr at ur place u shud know better thn me.

                    Uni is one of the best bike I hav ever seen, My Uni has done 60000 kms since Dec 2004, it never let me down any where for whatsoever reason.
                    However an year ago it was turning Off instantly and gave some starting issues similar to RacingSpirit's Uni and it was fixed within couple of days
                    I replaced the below parts and fixed the issue

                    1) BOSCH spark plug (Honda Genuine parts) - 110Rs
                    2) Ignition Coil - 350 Rs
                    3) Ensured battery is fully charged and fuse is working fine
                    4) Lubricate the Carburetor

                    If above foursteps are not fixing the issue then could be issues with CDI unit, Air Filter or Magnet coil.

                      I too have faced similar issue in my old Pulsar 150 classic, the mechanic changed one(defective) of the three coils(Ignition or whatever it was.) and the problem vanished away.

                        Oh of course the ignition coil! Now why didnt I think of that?? duh! get that checked up right away, it might even need replacement and I am sure the problem will go away. Replacing the coil is just a quick 5 mins job. Take it to the service centre, and tell them that there might be a problem with the coil, and ask them to check it with another spare working coil. If that works, walk across to the parts store and pick up a coil, give it to the mech and he'll replace it within 3 mins. Make sure u r watching him while he is checking and replacing the coil.

                        I am 90% sure that the problem is with the coil, but I didn't think of that! It would be interesting to see if the problem is not found with the coil. Do update us with that, will u?
