  • Friend's Bike

    Hi folks,

I was just wondering, i am going to get my friend's bike who is in US of A and he has the bike's RC book with him. But I can get the xerox copy of it. I have to renew the insurance too.. so if i go for a ride and if some cop catches me argues with me that its not my bike and i dont have the original RC what to do?

any letter or something from my friend will help?
A good long ride can clear your mind, restore your faith, and use up a lot of fuel.

Always be ready (get geared) to fall and then think of sitting on the motorcycle.

If I've understood your question, your friend has got a bike here in India & has left to US. So until he comes back you're going to use his bike.

If this is the case, theoritically, YES you can ride. As long as you have license to ride, clear insurance, clear RC, road tax paid, PUC certificate, you can ride his bike.

However, there's one glitch that how does the cop or someone knows that this is not a stolen bike? This has always been a question to me too.

I stumbled upon this article that has some info on this. Though this is for insurance, hope this could give you some clue, meanwhile I'll try finding more info for you

I have been riding a bike which is not in my name for the last 8.5 yrs & I haven't faced any problem.

But the fact is that my bike is in my uncle's name & we share the place in the same adress so the bike documents & my DL address shows the same.

Just for the record purpose I have'nt been Questioned even once inside karnataka while driving

Just carry all the important documents, and i guess there shouldn't be any problem with the cops.

In case of stolen bikes, original RC, insurance papers etc are always missing, so that gives a chance to the cops to stick a penalty on you, els there should not be a single issue if you are riding with all these documents.

Lets take an example. My father has provided our employees with bikes for their daily commuting and small official tours and all the vehicles are regsiterd either under my father's or my uncle's name so the workers just ride with all these imp. documents with a valid DL, and afaik they haven't been stopped for a single time by the cops for the similar issue you are referring to even in the other cities where they tour for business work.

So just carry these stuff with you and there shouldn't be any problem regarding cops.

          Thanks

              The copy will also work..!!
At least here in Rajasthan i can assure that one can ride with a copy of a RC, i myself use a copy of RC and carry it along with me while riding and haven't been in any trouble.

Get the RC photocopy attested from a gazetted officer, and you are good to ride!

and how does one attest it without the original in India ??

                  @Razor

I think as far as you are in local state I do not see any major problem with keeping the Photocopy, may be some local people from Mumbai & near by can confirm on this better.

Have the Xerox Copies - thats more than Enough for one to Ride the bike
Addding to that do not forget your License

If any Cops ask - tell them its your Brothers Bike - thats it
There is nothing serious in this issue

Unless the notary is your relative or close friend, you cannot get it signed without showing the originals, atleast, this is from my experience.

Well, this is very much practical that it is possible to argue or give several reasons to the cops & getaway, however, I wish to see an experts opinion on how we can handle such situation of riding a friend's bike/car. If someone can show the rule book, there's nothing like it.

If i'm not wrong, According to rule book- (1) The rider must carry the original documents on the bike

                        (2) One can ride a bike in anybody's name provided you have the original document.

Yes, you're right, here's the proof - Chennai Traffic Police :: FAQ (point #32)
Hope the attestation stuff should suffice, not mentioned anywhere though.

                          Still this one remains unanswered.
