  • [Help]: Custom registration number

    Good evening friends,
just wanted to know if getting a custom registration number for a bike is possible or not and if possible what is the procedure.
    e.g.: a number for a certain state is XY-12-Z-****
can we get custom number for the '****'?

depends on your location. here in haryana, theres a simple charge for it. pay 5k, to red cross, get a a receipt for the same, and you get your choice of number ( 5 k for two wheelers only, for 4 wheelers its like 10-25k)

      - Check with your dealer, as to whats the scenario for a custom number

Well, I'm not sure I understand your question completely though. I'm assuming that you're looking out for a lucky number or a fancy number. You cannot change the RTO of your choice, say if you're located near Ernakulam, you cannot obtain KL8 (unless you produce a proof that you stay in Thrissur).

Next comes the running serials. Say, if the current series running in KL7 is BG, then you cannot change this either. You have to abide by this or wait () until the series os over.

Next comes the running serial number, say, if the current series is KL7 BG & the last allotted running serial number is 2025, then you may opt for a running serial number that is not yet allocated to someone. Say you preffer the number 2525, then you may register it at the RTO for KL7BG 2525 by paying a nominal!!! RTO fee, with bill ofcourse.

Here, atleast in TN, it costs about 2000 for two wheeler, 5000 for 4 wheeler, not sure though how much it would cost for a LCV & above. However, there're few numbers that are really in demand like 1 to 9, 18, 81, 99, 999, 9999 to name a few, that would cost you even more.

Hope this gives you a good insight - MVDKerala - Home

ThanQ aargee, a good insight indeed.....I was talking about the running serial number only. The url was very helpful. Anything else to be done?
Actually I am going to buy my first bike soon and was wondering if I could get a customised number. I was just curious. And I am ignorant of and have no knowledge of the procedures of getting Registration number, insurance etc. Hope to learn soon.

Even if you don't need any of the listed number, the procedure is the same. Its adviced to book the number by paying the fee prescribed by RTO. Also, you can book the number only if the number is available. If its already booked (say you booked 7092), then it will not be allotted to anyone (justice to be maintained right?).

There's another way, however, not reliable & not adviced. Source a strong influence driving school or a broker. Say you need a number 7218 which is no way a fancy, you can try your luck. So you don't book this number, but your broker should present your vehicle paper in such a way that this paper is presented immediately after 7217 is allotted (still you may have to shell out some less money to this guy). Hope you got this point, if not let me know.

the Govt. has laid some rules as to the size and shape of the number plate/numbers. Can anyone guide me to those? As a law abiding Indian citizen, I'd like to follow them as I've heard there's a fine of Rs.50 each time a cop catches you for a number plate not complying to the rules.

i think for 2 wheelers 2250 or 2500 for getting a fancy no. in Kerala.

                  @ Prakriti, where r u from?

actually u don't need to worry for getting some fancy no. showroom guys having a special agent for registrations. If u want some special no's tell them that u required this so and so no... if the no's are not available they will tell u to pay the amount. If anyone came for the same no u choose, there will be a auction conducting by RTO.

Just wanted to add and share my thoughts here. I had got my Yamaha registered with number of my choice.

I went along with the dealer to book the number of my choice. He took me inside the Chennai West RTO and asked me to pay a nominal fee prescribed and took the receipt. With the receipt I had approached the number allotment section where there was a book with serial numbers running pages. The book indicate the TN XX and Alphabet series. You may browse the book and choose the number of your choice. Once you find the number of your choice then the you will need to inform at the counter. He then makes the note on the top of one of the registration document.

So called nominal fee is only for the government book of records, actually you will need to pay huge tips for obtaining the number and there is no negotiation what so ever.

If the RTO has opened series AB, the serial numbers are actually opened for the public upto 2000-3000 numbers to choose from.

It is not necessary that you will need wait for your turn say if your number chosen is 3423 and need not wait till 3422 to be registered.

If that was the case, there in the book lot of fancy numbers were booked in advance by alteast many series past.

Influencial people get their vehicles with future series numbers today say AD-1 etc without wait for completing the current running series say AB and AC.

I got to know from my experience that most of the time, all the fancy numbers are not given that easily. They rather get that to 4 wheelers to a 2 wheelers for better sum. Saying this, there is nothing like WE CANNOT GIVE THIS NUMBER'. All comes with price tag.

I have seen Merc with number '1' and also seen Enfield Bullet with '1'.

I would suggest you to go for the HS(high Security) number plate look-like.
The numbers are emboss and laminated. If you look at the numbers closer you will find the black ink is marked with small 'INDIA' written in crossword.
The white surface is of a reflective material that adds safety during the nights. These look neat and the numbers they come in one standard font type are the legible and it complies with RTO guidelines.

You may get these done in Chennai around 650 bucks!

These are lot seen in many vehicles across states.

Take a look at my Yamaha in the album section.

Beg to differ here. I booked my Activa number with the govt fee of Rs 2000 for which I've the reciept (will try to scan & upload), other than this I paid nothing.

If you probably mean that if there're 2 contenders for the same number, then what you said is right.

Likewise, all the single digit & palindrome numbers comes with a high price (with bill ofcourse). If I'm not wrong, its around 25K for "9"

There is no procedure for getting this. It is just a look-like and you get it from the normal number plate shops if they are doing such. It is very attractive and definitely it would make people to turn their around to glance once more.

You can get this from SRKMS sticker shop, Wellington Plaza, Mount road. He takes one day to deliver. However, he will not fit that on vehicle nor the plates comes with ready to fit holes. You will need to take it to local mechanic to have this fixed.

You might have been lucky getting your number for just 2k. I got my Unicorn registered with number of my choice way far from the running number series with extra bucks.

Again, this was quite some time back .

I dunno about the 2000 Rs... I just got my car.. two weeks back... and I was told that I had to give a DD of 8500/- and they would give me 1000 number choices... from the current running serial... The running serial number was 78XX and they said they will give the entire 79YY series and I can choose a number from it....

This procedure also varies from state to state... In Gujarat where I was in 2007-08, the policy is Rs 1000/- DD for 2 wheelers and Rs 2500/- DD for 4 wheelers. You give your preferred number - only the XXXX - the series of GJ-01-JH for example remains the same.

They will wait for 15 days - if no one else asks for that number, it'd be alloted to you at no additional cost. Else, they conduct auction once a month where all these numbers are put on auction and you are invited to attend the same. Whatever price you bid for, the number is yours then.
