  • Heating problem on new Karizma R

    Hi,
I got my Karizma R on 28th Jan 2010. I've ridden bike for almost 120km. My bike's engine gets hot and some oily smell comes out of it. (even for a 8-10km ride)

Is this normal with new engine?

    Thanks in advance.

    Query Approved.

Yes, it happens with a brand new engine which has just started running. Moreover, yours is JUST a hundred and twenty kilometres old! So, relax and ride her following all the run-in procedured.

After the first servicing is done, the mill will start to "breathe" real well, and will open up eventually. That is when you would feel what a 223cc engine can do!

Congratulation on your new ride. New engine will heat more than a well run engine. Not sure about oily smell, but don't worry. Just make sure there's sufficient engine oil and try to change engine oil within 500-600 kms. I know its not mentioned in manual. But its a good practice. Later you can change between 2-4 k depending on the oil.

          Hi,

What are the symptoms and indication of engine overheating in ZMA? I think my steed is overheating, its now 2400kms old, these symptoms I noticed-

          1) Feeling extreme heat of engine on my legs when riding in heavy traffic at 20-30km/hr in low gears.
          2) Not able to touch the engine with hands ( clutch cover and left side crank case cover ) as it is too hot even after riding 10kms in traffic this was not in case when I owned Unicorn.
          3) Feel of harshness in engine in heavy traffic ride also vibrations feel between 3k RPM to 5k RPM on foot pegs, handle bar even brake pedal.

Please suggest if it is normal with ZMA or thee is some AFR mixture setting issue ( lean mixture ) or it is just because I had Unicorn previously.

Post this in ZMA thread to get quicker response.

Change your engine oil from xxW30 to xxW40 grade. Almost all issues will go away.

Re: Heating problem on new Karizma R

This is a clear case of clutch abuse, please check if the clutch is adjusted properly. Too much thread (half clutch) will keep the clutch plates engaged and in city traffic, you will start to feel over heat and smell. If you don't know how to adjust the clutch, go to some local mechanic. They just have to adjust the knob near the clutch level arm. That's it.

Remember, ZMR is air cooled 223cc bike. Since in stop and go traffic there is less air circulating around the engine, you may feel the heat to be excessive. You will have to live with it.

As for your sluggishness and vibration, it should become normal once the clutch is adjusted properly. Every engine has a particular RPM where it matches the resonance frequency of the metal, hence it will give you a vibration. Do you still use 10w30 mineral oil? When was the last time it was replaced? It doesn't matter how less KM you clock on your bike. The oil needs to be changed atleast once every 3-4 month or 2000-3000 Km.
