          Well, First of all, The Pulsar meters, are even easier to access, than FZ It can be opened up easily. I have opened about 6 times so far, just adjust the awry tacho needle.

          Secondly as Rahul said, it's Surface-mounted LEDs. The problem is to solder and desolder surface mounted leds, especially for LCD. Even with a fine soldering tip, heat exposure to these leds for even 5 seconds can fry them.

          Also, LED Back-ligiting for LCD can also be tough to change and Electroluminescence Panel (ELP) Backlighting, will need seperate units, Surface Mounted LEDs won't suffice. Where will we get these ELP modules?. Only way to check is to start working on broken speed console.


          I haven't done any experimentation for long. It's a risk worth 3500 buck (the meter cost if i'm not wrong), but I will definitely do it. My exams are on, but I can undertake this project only in march.

          BTW does anybody has a spare or even accident Pulsar speedo?

          Okay, So its getting clearer now. If you do go ahead with this project in march, Please do let me know, also it would be helpful for others if you could post some pics too. And if its okay with you, i would like to come there and you can show me exactly how its done. I am just 200 Kms away from Bangalore.

            This was this thing i was searching for a long time... I wan't this badly on my FZ...

            @JD can you explain the steps to do that... We would be delighted if you post the step by step procedure in D.I.Y thread... I know this requires some effort to do, but if you have time pls do it for us...

                    It would be similar for all Digital Console bike, but not exactly same. The principle remains same as here I-Hacked.com Taking Advantage Of Technology - Changing your backlight color of gauges.

                      Ya I read it... where can i buy the suitable LED's for FZ? and what is its wattage?... not an experienced person in soldering as well... i am anxious coz if anything goes wrong... i am gonna spend another 2300RS... so making clear my doubts...

                        Surface Mounted LEDs are very sensitive to heat. If you are not experinced in soldering I would advice you to leave the idea for the moment.

                        Also the only way to check specs of the LEDs is to either get a damaged speedo and experiment or open the one you have

                        Surface Mounted LEDs will be available at electronic component outlets.

                          This is really exciting..........However...
                          1.There is a lot of risk involved as we need to break the seal of the console and if successfully done we need to re-solder of a new led which only and expert can do....
                          2.Just a thought...if we place a transparent color paper between the sealed panel and the cover that fits on the faring....it will give us a different color backlight

                          Its just a thought and easy way out.......

                              As far as Pulsars are concerned, there's no seal of any kind, just simple screws to open the console. Yes, we can place a transparent paper or a plastic which covers the whole area. But that would work only on the LCD, and the backlit would be less intensity, also the problem of installing such a thing.

                              The good about soldering the LEDs is that even if you damage them, you will damage the LED no the PCB.

                                Agreed that placing the transparent cover is not the end to end solution....but may be fun for newbies...
