  • Need Help on Buying a Second Hand Bike in US

Guys I am in US now - precisely in Plano, Dallas, Texas.
Will be around for 4-5 months.. more and will come back to India.

I am missing my bike , so was thinking of buying a 2nd hand bike and sell it once I am going back. Like I can spend max $2.5k to buy one and sell it may be or 1.5k or more if I get it.

Thing is bike rent is like $100 - $140 a day - so that wont work.
So what i want to know is

    1) Things to look when I buy a bike here.
    2) Procedure
    3) insurace and stuffs...

Any info would help... of yeah finally also suggest some bikes

Maybe people like Dhairya could help. Or even Powerslave. Maybe you should PM them and ask them. They have been in the US for years.

    Approved
The Wheel was a great invention; Two Wheels with a Motor in between was even better!

        Hey Rocky,

        These are my inputs:
        1) First of all, within 2.5 K, all you can buy is a 2nd hand 500/600cc and below bikes.
        2) Start looking on Craig's List, that will be the cheapest way to buy one and i wont be surprised if you end up buying it from your neighbour.
        3) When you go for test ride, make sure the tyres are good and offcourse bike's stability as you will be crusing at high speeds, make sure it has side/frame sliders otherwise you might end up spending some amount on them. They are just for the engine protection, wont save your knees, i dont have them on my bike thou.
        4) You need to have atleast a Motorcycle Learner's Permit for test ride, and no you cannot use your Indian License as an alternative. In US, you need to have a different license for riding a bike (You dont need to have a bike to write the learner exam). It is a computer based test and it comes from the booklet that you can collect from the DMV office.
        5) After you complete a months time with Learner's Permit, you can go for final ride test to get your permit. During Learner's period, if you wish to ride you should be accompanied by a person with a valid motorcycle license (not another learner's permit) at all times.
        6) Once you buy the bike, the owner will hand you over the bike's title, which you will need to get new registration plates. For insurance, you can call up various insurance companies and get the quote.. "Progressive" is pretty cheap. There will be two options i guess i.e. "Full" and "Accidental", "Accidental" is the cheaper one and only will cover the other party involved in the accident (god forbid).
        7) You will have to make sure that you have valid stickers for "Safety Inspection", it can be done from any service station or petrol pump and they normally check to see if your electricals, tyers are in good condition.
        8) You are all set, buy a good camera and click loads of pics and post them

Let me know if you have any questions.

If you get lucky, you might get your hands on Honda CBR 600 F4, just make sure that whichever bike you buy has a CLEAN TITLE (Has not been in an accident, or stolen)

A good long ride can clear your mind, restore your faith, and use up a lot of fuel.

What! You come to US and all you can find is a Ninja 250? Come on dude, you can ride that bike in India too. You need to raise your bar a little, hmmm about $3500 should get you a decent Honda F4 or Ninja 650R (Thats what i own).
