  • [Help]: Rebuilding a Suzuki Shaolin

    Folks,

I have recently acquired a Suzuki Shaolin 99' from my in-law.

The bike was in running condition until the time he had upgraded to a R15. Currently I am in process of getting the mechanicals rite. I have completed overhauling of the brakes, speedo, tacho and some lame visuals for the bike.

I have the following upgrades in mind. Need your suggestions & help to ge this 2Stroker the 2nd life

    1. The rear shocks have to be replaced and they are worn out. I was more inclined to fit the Gas shocks on the rear. But, my mechanic was advising me against it mentioning the life to be bad for the Gas shocks. I am not sure how far this information is true. Need your suggestions here folks!

    2. I am looking at fitting front disc brakes for the Shaolin. Will it be an overkill for the front brakes!? If not, which front brake system would optimally fit the Shaolin.

    3. There is a mild noise coming from the Crank. Its not that bad at the moment, but something that would need to be checked for sure.

    4. Planning to source a Shogun exhaust system for the bike and still unlucky. It would be great if anyone could help!

    5. Repainting & Stickers. Need your suggestions on where I could repaint the bike. I am looking at dual toned finish and where can I find good paint booths for bike in Chennai? The Shaolin stickers as I know is not so easily available. Would be great if anyone could help me source the Shaolin/Shogun vinyls!

I am also expecting more suggestions on any specific things that I overlooked here would be of great help!

Thanks a lot for your help in advance.

Go for the gas suspension only if you don't alter the height of the vehicle. RTR's rear suspension (if a straight fit) is one of the best in the country. Gas filled suspensions are real good ones compared to Shaolin (or any of old TVS products for that matter)

Fitting a front disc is definetly good & you've to do some amount of work on the forks too. The existing fork cannot hold the assembly & hence you've to go for a fork that has the assembly already. This means, you've to change the front wheel hub, spokes. Check if Apache's front fork could fit directly, if yes then its good. Hope you got this point.

Is it the noise of crankshaft or connecting rod? Get this checked from TVS A.S.S.

Not sure how you need the help? Are you looking for a new or a used exhaust?

Buy the spares only from TVS A.S.S with the bill, though you may be able to source parts from grey market with lower price. Do not go in for parts that are locally made in the garage after which you're struck to them. Fit in the parts such that they're available readily from any automobile shop. Start building the bike only after you've triple checked that you've all the parts required for the rebuild.

Hey man aditya over here.. been off the forum for a while but your post caught my eye.. restored my shaolin a while ago. and now its in perfect running condition, except for a much need paint job.

        1. gas shock might be too stiff for the shaolin, it weighs less than 100 kgs! i'd suggest going for the max 100 shocks cause they're a diret fit and work quite well with the bike, if you want something different go for the sns suspension by bajaj for the discover or the xcd. gas shocks might be over kill. try fiddling withthe suspension before changing it, stiffen them up to see how much life they really have

        2. front disc. most ppl would say its overkill, but if you have the funds its definitely worth it , makes a huge difference. i fit the disc kit from the original suzuki fiero. the problem ifaced was getting parts for that after i fit it.. i suggest going for the disc kit on the fiero f2 or the fiero fx. parts for those are easier to obtain as opposed to the original fiero. they looks the same, but tiny annoying differences exist

        3. the mild noise from the crank might be a clearance issue. happens with most shaolins, only option is to over bore or replace the bore completely. i was luck enough to get my hands on a new bore kit and am using that right now.. you'll have to scour the two stroke forum. i think autl has magically found over size shaolin pistons. i suggest contacting him. another person worth talking to i nikhil. he's been rebuilding his shaolin as well.. its a tough and painful process :P but worth it.

        4. no need to replace the entire exhaust system remove the muffler and put in the shogun free flow those are available. aren't too complex its a lot louder, and power shift a little higher.. i used it for a while but shifted back to the original muffler

        5. stickers-- oh god, unless you're flexible wrt stickering you're in for a world of hurt.. both nikhil and i have been in this constant limbo wrt original stickering.. they're next to impossible to find, and dealers seem to want to sell them only in batches of 10.. i'm not sure where you can get it done in chennai, but if you're willing i'd suggest experiment with options other than the stock stickering, because searching for it is quite painful

          Thanks Aargee & Aditya!

          1. The rear shocks have got noisy and I am not sure how long I could fiddle with it. Anyways, I think I will settle with the max 100 shocks(Gabriel?) for the moment since I dont want to mess up the ride quality.

          2. I was more inclined for the Apache disc brake system. Love the pattern of the rotor . Is it a nightmare to fit the Apache disc brakes on the Shaolin? How is it different from the FieroF2 brake systems?

          3. I have asked my mechanic to open the engine and see what surprise I have got there with the crank noise. I guess, its a safe thing to acquire the spares and stock them. If not for now, atleast in future it might help!

          4. I am already running the Shogun kit in the shaolin silencer (flute). But there is no big difference with the note or power delivery! Thats one reason I wanted to replace the complete silencer kit to Shogun's. I am big fan of the Shogun exhaust note!

          5. Stickers! Almost the same reply everywhere . Is it the same case with Shogun stickers as well? I am thinking of doing a dual tone paint job from Dupont paint booth here in Chennai (primarily black & tint of red is what I have in my mind).

          Cheers,
          Arun

            1. the max 100 ones are the easiest to find and fit as well

            2. wrt the apache disc kit, shouldn't be a problem, get a good meach to do it as its not a direct fit.. go through the two stroke forums. there is a rx135 which has been restored and is running the apache disc kit on spoked wheels

3.yup stock up whatever you can.. its tough to find spares though

            4. ha ha might not sound like a shogun even with the exhaust.. bore and stroke are different. but oh well no harm in trying

            5. I think you'll have more luck finding the shogun stickers. bu that'll just confuse what people think of the bike.

              Guys,

Shaolin Stickers are available in Bangalore JC road. Of course they are 2nd quality make but something is better than nothing. And it looked really genuine (the fonts and the color gradiation). The only catch here is, it is for the red-and-yellow combination Shaolin . The dealer had two sets available when I visited him last week.

Shogun Stickers are also available (for the black bike). This is in Shivajinagar, Bangalore.

Infact I have a set of both the Shogun and Shaolin stickers for future "projects"

                Hi Anachronix,

Good to have another Shaolin here at Xbhp.

As for the stickers you can get them at L V R Auto Distributors, Thayar Sahib Street, General Patters Road,, Chennai.

As for the quality of the vinyl, they are the best OEM replacements I could find in the market. Will cost you about 500 bucks per set.

                Good Luck,
                Karthik.

Karthik, which sticker set is available here in Chennai, Shaolin or Shogun? I need the orange stickers of Shaolin (similar to ShaolinRider's bike). Is this available in GP road?

                    Karthik,

That's great news for me mate! I will check this shop over the weekend.

My bike is again in hibernation mode since it badly needs a paint job and I dint want to get it painted without having the stickers.

                    Cheers,
