  • Accelerator cable too short?

I've been really going through petrol during the last few days and I couldn't work out why, however today I noticed that my accelerator cable doesn't have any slack. It's actually really tight even though it is adjusted as much as possible. I just had a new accelerator cable fitted so it must have been too short and doesn't allow the throttle to reach a fully closed position. As I can't adjust it to be any looser, there is nothing that I can do is there? I'll have to get a longer one put on right?

    Thanks

If there is no slack in your accelerator cable, then has your vehicle idling gone up??? and which vehicle are we talking about?? For eg, on a Thunderbird an incorrectly routed accelerated cable causes the rpm to rise ( pulls on the throttle ) when the handlebar is turned to one side.

Also if the clutch cable is routed incorrectly, it will keep breaking every 5-10k kms. ( same bike )

Why do I always forget to mention the bike I have?

Bullet 500 and yes idling has gone up, I can turn the idle adjustment screw in the carb really far down because it is not stopping the slide because the slide is being held by the tight accelerator cable. I have no idea how I managed to miss this for so long.

But you raise a valid point when you mention the handlebar being turned. Mine doesn't do that. I actally have that happen to me quite a lot when the cable is caught somewhere or something. In reality if it is tight then it should accelerate when I turn the handlebars right? Maybe I should take off the petrol tank and check that the cable isn't getting caught anywhere and somehow not allowing the slide to return to it's proper position.

Thats the only thing I can think of to do.

It happens to all the Machismo's evenmy friend's 350 had this problem i had put a tape on the place where the cable adjusting nut is present. Actually the problem is that whenever you turn the bike right the cable comes out of the adjuster unit and it gets stuck there, put it back in and the problems gone. Just put a black tape properly.

            Questions
            1. Where did you source the cable from? Is it from a authorized spares division or from a local automobile spare parts shop?
            2. Was that a OE cable or a equivalent of OE cable?
            3. Who bought the cable & who fitted? Did you do both the job or did you ask you mech to do so? Was it done at A.S.S or local garage?

It hasn't come out of the nut.

Now that I think about it, that is a pretty accurate visual

While everyone seems to go to authorised service centres to get stuff done, I cannot. There is one Enfield Dealer in Mathura. They are a huge rip off and have no idea how to work on a bike properly. They charged me for authentic parts and gave me cheap local ones. They also gave the bike back to me totally unadjusted. Since then I go to the small Bullet Wallas around who do a much better job. I've found one who only works on Bullets and he has genuine parts. This cable was a genuine cable fitted by him.

This morning I took the petrol tank off and played around with the cable, after pulling it towards the front of the bike somewhat, it gave a little bit of slack to the accelerator. Now I don't think there should be any problem because there should be enough slack that the slide can return to it's rightful place (as emperor?) but there is only the smallest bit of slack so I'm really not happy as I can't be sure.

I still can't get the idle tuning right. There must be many different cable sizes for different models and years and so on. My handlebars and slightly longer and higher than the standard ones so I'd imagine that the cable needs to be a bit longer to accomodate that. I'll go into Mathura one day soon and see if I can hunt down a longer one. It still doesn't make sense to me though because the cable reaches fine, it just doesn't have enough slack for some reason. I really hate it when things like this happen. What is also annoying is that I bought another accelerator cable so I'd have a spare, now I'll have to try and take that back and change it as well.
