  • 4 year old P180 Ug2 won't lean!

    Hi there everyone. I have a 4year old Pulsar 180 which has clocked just about 28000 Kms and am in the process of buying the ninja 250 .Off late i have been extremely enthusiastic about leaning and increasing my corner speed in general. I know its not the best bike to have specially for cornering but its all i have to hone my skills before i get my hands on the ninja.

    Now whats troubling me is that off late i am leaning better but bike wobbles beyond a certain angle of lean which gets really scary and prevents me from having my first knee down moment. I believe the cause of the handling issue could be any of the following -
    • Worn out tyres( but its not exactly bald) ( front- stock 26k old mrf zapper, rear 120/80 13k old IRC)- Will post pics for better refrence.
    • Suspension seems to bottom out with a pillion so i would presume its set at the softest.
    • Possible non allinged forks ( had two accidents in d past but never noticed the difference as I mostly travelled on straight roads) or a bad swingarm

    To be honest i am a big noob when it comes to technicals and hence am not too comfortable in going to the authorised service centre or a mechanic for the possibility of getting ripped( have been ripped by mechs on quite a few occasions in the past) I will post pics of all things i mentioned to give you guys a better idea of what's what. I 'd be delighted if i could be helped on this particular issue. Any inputs from the more technically inclined folks out would be appreciated.

    I would sincerely advise you not to practice leaning on public roads though.

          Well I just read the thread and was about to answer, but seems like you are ranting out of frustration now

          Jokes apart:
          The Older pulsars were always considered to be not to good when it comes to cornering, however having said that you can still do it. The effort\skill that it will take to do so, you would have probably scrapped your knees off on a R15\RTR.

          Wobble can exist for all the three points you mentioned. So I am just wondering what advice you wanted here!

          1) Tyres play a big role, check for the wear and the grooves on the tyre, if not in place then may be its time to change it before you want to experiment something so radical.
          2) Suspension can be hardenned, however the Pulsar (even the old 220s) had spongy suspension as they were never meant for such stuff. They were more like commuting machines.
          3) Head to svc and check if your fork alignment is flawed. Ajinkya has made his forks a bit more stiffer by adding a lil bit more fork oil than recommended. Why not try it out with point 2!

            thanks satyen. will try the fork oil thing for sure and get the springs stiffened too. Though one thing i wanted to know was whether the springs should be changed altogether.

              wow,satyen i am a big fan of your comments and write ups but in this case ummmmmm i am not too sure i can agree with you.
              we,our friends used to do footpeg scrapping run with old ug2 s from sikkim to siliguri a total twisties a bikers dream ,never had any prob.sorry if i upset you.
              ya a harder suspension setting is the key.

                Ajinkya has made his forks a bit more stiffer by adding a lil bit more fork oil than recommended.
                It's not at all recommended to overfill your forks. It'll ruin the forks in the shorter run itself !

                  dude i suspect worn out tyres.pulsar is not better with even half worn out tyres.so change ur rear tyre and check it out.

                    my two cents.

                    check the following things.

                    1. Front tire
                    2. Get fork oil replaced, and use more than required quantity
                    3. Set the rear suspension to the stiffest
                    4. Check your forks for misalignment
                    5. If they are ok, check your T-joint, in pulsars this part gets easily bent during accidents, replace it.
                    6. Go Lean !

                    If you still find the bike wobbling, time to improve your technique
                    I have put my knee down on my UG3, with absolutely no wobbles.

                      Thanks for the replies guys. Got my rear break pads replaced today and while on my way to work the guy in front of me suddenly changed lanes resulting in panic braking. The bike skid for quite a while making me think that the tyres are the culprits here.

                      The front tyre though 4 yrs old has just seen 26 Thousand kms. Not badly worn out but has some cracks in between the treads while the rear is pretty decent but seems glazed. I am attaching a few pics for you guys.

                      If i were to change the tyres would it be fine if i could put the r15 front tyre. Also the fact that i am using a 120/80 rear tyre could it be a hindrance too?

                          I would suggest go for the stock tire size for front, but your tire barely looks 7K kms old

                            See I told you,! but i guess i should be changing it anyways cos it just doesn't grip the road well anymore. Just can't pull off anymore stoppies, the tyre locks and then skids.

                            Guess there's a shelf life for tyres too cos they look glazed for sure. Coming to the R15 front tyre. Isn't it a 80/90 17"? should be a good choice in my opinion and i was thinking of putting pirelli sport demon at the back.

                            And lastly could you please please please tell me how to stiffen up the rear suspension.Sorry for being such a noob

                              From the pictures, your rear tyres looks like car tyres. I don't mean broad. It looks flat on the surface. This would make contact area small while cornering. Why not try tyres with rounder surface.
