  • P180 Gearbox and downshifting

Hi guys. I need some advice on this.

Here is my problem. eg: Im going at around 50kmph. I know there is a signal ahead and its a downslope. So i fully depress my clutch and brake to slow to around ~40kmph. This signal has a junction, and its very busy so i know i will have to get really slow at that junction and most probably stop due to red light. So i want to shift to N and coast down the slope and slowly stop at the signal. But i don't want to slow the bike too early. So i have the clutch depressed, im at ~40kmph, i downshift to 4th, 3rd, but now when i downshift this loud noise comes from the engine.

The noise is like if you poke a metal stick into the metal blades of a fast spinning table fan. Or like that sound that comes when a bus gear is shifted incorrectly. I can feel the impacts on my gearshift lever.

The above was just an example to describe the situation. It happens anytime im going fast and downshift to N. It happens around the 2nd gear. The sound starts as i start pressing down on the shift lever about halfway and is gone as soon as the shift is over. It lasts less than a second but is very strong.

Its like the gear is trying to engage without the clutch or something. Im not sure. It has happened many times, and now i avoid down shifting at speed. But there is no difference afterwards. Engine sound is same, no new vibrations, no difference in clutch or gears.

    My questions:
    1) Am i down shifting wrong? ie. should i slow the bike before down shifting even if i have the clutch fully depressed?

    2) Is this normal or is something wrong with my bike?

    3) Will it have caused damage?

    Please help.

shift to neutral only when bike has stopped or less than 5kmph .

to coast down the slope just leave the throttle and when RPMs go down shift down 1 gear , and so on .
This happens on most bikes when you try to down shift or go to neutral too early , try not to repeat it .

The problem lies with your down-shifting technique. Why you want to shift to neutral at 40 KMPH ?

            @Ayson:

Use "matching the revs" or blipping the throttle before the downshifting to get rid of this.
            Full Stop.

you're getting this noise cuz the gear gets slotted at the wrong RPM.

you need to match the rev as you downshift...

secondly dont shift to N.do it gradually, 4th-3rd go slower then to 2nd...
