  • Two wheeler license in US - NYC

    Hi guys,
I wanna know If I can rent/ride a bike in NYC using India two - wheeler license. If not then how easy/difficult is it to get a International two wheeler driving license in India?? So that I can use the same, to rent/ride bikes outside the country.

    Thanks,

AFAIK, u can use the Indian license for 3 months in the US. Its the case with cars, that I know. I used to drive there. Should be the same with bikes as well. International license in India is easy. Even thats valid for only 6 months I guess. Beyond which u will have to apply and get the license from that country. People like - Akhil, Santoosh, Anurag Sir should be able to help you out.

          1) Driving laws in USA vary from state to state.

          2) Generally speaking, you can drive with any foreign driver license in USA for a limited period of time. Your regular Indian license will suffice as a foreign license. International driving permit is not required, and probably not recognized as a valid license to drive.

          3) I searched for 'DMV NY' in Google.

Please read: New York State Department of Motor Vehicles - NYS DMV - NYSDMV - Driver - Vehicle

Please thoroughly read: NYS DMV - Driver License, Learner Permit and Non-Driver Photo ID Card

          4) Apart from a valid (US/foreign) license, you also need Insurance to drive.

Indian driving licenses work in the US - we rent cars Hertz there and they say that we don't need to carry an IDP in the US, our Indian driving licenses will work.

The same rule should apply for motorcycles.

As far as the info I have got in the USA, UK and the Australia, when you arrive in a country you can drive around for 1 year with your driving licence from country of origin. But, that has to be an international driving license.

                Now, why international driving license?
Most countries, in fact some states in India too issue driving licenses in local language. An international driving licence is made in English and is issued for 1 year time period. I even spoke with cops in the UK. They said they don't understand what is international license and what is local license due to fact that so many countries do it in a different way. All they understand is whether the license is in English or not and whether it is valid or not for the time period and for the kind of vehicle you are driving. This validity of 1 year should augment with your arrival in that country shown in your passport.

The Gulf countries seem to have an exception for this.

Whenever I ride/drive abroad I always get a IDL done from here. And that help in renting vehicles abroad. Also your Indian license should be older than 2 years to be able to rent abroad.

is it mandatory to apply for IDP on the state where you got the license from?

My license is from tamil nadu and i am staying in Mumbai, and the agent says that i have to go to TN to get IDP
A good long ride can clear your mind, restore your faith, and use up a lot of fuel.

Always be ready (get geared) to fall and then think of sitting on the motorcycle.
