  • [Help]: Air filter queries for Yamaha Fz!

I Have a Yamaha Fzs, I have a friend who is a mechanic in Lalbagh road, Bangalore. He suggested me to add a K&N filter which would cost about 2k, and he said that BHP would increase !

May I know how much of it will increase ? Is it worth installing ? Mileage will be affected for sure, but how much ?

What a K&N actually does is it takes in more air than a normal filter. To compensate this you also need to increase your fuel intake to the carburettor by upjetting. You will get some increase in power and a nice loud grunt but fuel efficiency will be reduced by 5-7 atleast. For FZ-S it would be RC-1060 model (RS.1800)

Exactly... @Topic starter also remember to do the upjetting when you put the K&N... otherwise the air fuel mixture will be lean and the engine starts to overheat which will cause extra heat over the piston head which in turn cause the piston rings to melt and finally the engine will seize...

Note: for all cases the engine doesn't seize... there are lot of people who fits the K&N and does no upjetting and have no probs... my friend has a ZMA with a K&N without upjetting... i really hate to ride that bike... coz of the air fuel mixture is lean... the proper is to do upjetting... the mileage difference will be really high, atleast 5-8 i think...

                    Wow such doom n gloom

Wouldn't the piston crown melt first, not the rings? Since the rings hold the pressure in whereas the piston (esp the crown) takes the initial hit of the explosion, heat, pressure. The piston is made (factory and forged) from aluminium, The rings are made from a much harder metal/s (alloy) than the piston, also the bore liner is made from a metal much harder than the aluminium piston.

Aluminium has a lower melting point Vs the other metal in the combustion chamber so it makes sense first that the piston will melt (I've seen numerous pistons melt but rarely rings)

I've got a K&N cone filter on my FZ-S (200cc engine kit) with aftermarket carb.

In the OP's case, since you are riding almost 100km's I'd suggest leave it as stock/factory as possible. Don't bother chasing power upgrades as your fuel economy will suffer.

Re: [Help]: Air filter queries for Yamaha Fz!

There are other K-N filter rather than r1060 or rc1060 such as "YA-1611" which are designed specifically for yamaha fz16 and fazer v.2 ,which goes right into the airbox.

But the fact is you can't get K-N roar when using a YA-1611, but can give the extra horse power and there is no need to upjetting since it goes directly into the airbox

YA-1611 - K&N Replacement Filters, Replacement Air Filter direct from K&N

The k-n filter YA-1611 has been designed to fit yamaha fz16,fzs and fazer 150(not the old Bumblebee eyed fazer(2003))

It is almost a year now, I've been using UNI air filter in my bike. It's been a satisfactory journey till now & most probably I'll end up being a loyalist.
Few points noticed - pros & cons
                              Pros
                              Torque increase in lower gears.
                              Sweet sound.
Easy to clean the filter. (DIY)
No jetting was done. (correct me if I am wrong - Jetting is required only in case of irregular fit!)

                              Cons
Knocking sound in high traffic conditions. (maybe due to fuel)
Engine hiccups start soon after around 300 kms of service.

All in all, I am not planning on changing back to stock, as of now.... satisfied!!!
Not very sure if anyone else here tried UNI!!
