Can partially used tyres be stored for long duration?
I am getting a new pair of tyres as part of the prize won for best travel blogger contest. My GS150R has run only 7.5k kms, so I think it still has 2-3 years minimum tyre life remaining. If I get the new tyres, can I store them OR put them on bike and store the current tyres for next 2-3 years without any problem?Tags: None

Storing partially used or new tyres for a year is not a problem. The Wheel was a great invention; Two Wheels with a Motor in between was even better!

+1 . If not selling, wrap them all over with newspaper and plastic sheet and store it in dry place away from sun & moist.Originally posted by Puneet1 View Postbest option would be to try and sell them . tyre rubber hardens over the years .

put some silica gel or simpler sprinkle some rice inside the tyre. This will protect it from moisture. Also if you can, get the tube powder from a tyre shop and rub that liberally all over the inside and the outside of the tyre.

Tyres are primarily made up of Natural Rubber, Carbon Black, Sulphur, TMT, China clay along with various other chemicals, though in very less quantity.
Tyres, like all other rubber articles have a bench life. Though, tyres are made to withstand heat, moisture and pressure, they tend to give way with the passage of time.
Apart from all the suggestions that my mates have given, I would like to suggest you to apply good quantity of Silicon Oil ( can be substituted by Liquid silicon Emulsifier) all over.
This would ensure that the rubber stays in shape for long. Silicon Oil is a viscous and transparent liquid (resembles a lot like Glycerin) and is used as the base for almost all of the polishes. One can get Silicon oil from the shop who sells Rubber Chemicals.... would cost approx. 200/- per kg. And I guess 300 gms would be sufficient. Further, after applying the oil, wrap the tyre with plastic/ polyethene and put it flat on a surface, dont hang it.
All Cheers

P.S: Try selling them off instead. A lot of your mates would willingly give you the deserved price and would save you from the hazzles too.Its not about the BHP or the CC, its about one common religion called Biking!!!

Even I am leaning towards this option, as storing tyres for 2-3 or even more years doesn't seem to be too much of an attractive option. So anyone looking for new tubeless tyres , you kow whom to PMOriginally posted by dcs View PostP.S: Try selling them off instead.
