  • [Help]: Query about Ignition Timing in Shogun

    Hi there ppl,

I want to know how to alter the ignition timing in a Suzuki Shogun.

Please guide me along with the consequences of advancing & retarding of the timing.

    Cheers,
    Karthik.

Before u think of advancing the timing or retarding it, u need a proper matching cdi for it, with OE cdi i would advice you too stick to stock timing.

Even if u advance the timing with the stock cdi, you will end up holing the piston top !!

I dont know how i missed this alert, thanks for the PM ..

@ psycho98: Thanks brother.......will definitely keep your advice in mind...

But I still have one more question:

How do you physically advance or retard the timing? Quite clueless about it.

Does it got to do something with the position of trigger coil with respect to the Flywheel?

& btw how does one verify the Timing ? ie. check it??

          Cheers ppl.......

Here is a good read on ignition timing.

            Dan's Motorcycle " Ignition Timing "

You can check the timing with timing light

You have to drill a hole in your baseplate(coil plate) or can cut a slot eg:4mm from the company specified timing.

P.S: if you want to do it on the shogun, u need to change the entire coilplate magneto plus the cdi + RR unit. there are a couple of guyz who have done it and ruuning it succesfully.

To change the timing in shogun, remove the magneto and you can see the timing marker in the core,One will be in the engine and other in the core. to advance or retard the timing lose the 3 screws and rotate the core cockwise or counter clockwise If you advance too much, slapping noise will become louder and engine will feel like very rough. I recomend timing advance to maxxx 1mm rotation for improved pick up.
