  • sealed o ring chain for older gen pulsars

    hello all,
i have a pulsar 180 cc ug2.i brought it in jan 2005.it was the first model of pulsar dtsi s which came up with 17 inch wheels.i still love the bike so much as i tour regularly with it.
one of the many probs which was bothering it from the beginning was the chain drive system.the original chain went down only in 17000kms.i checked the chain it was having 15 front and 43 rear teeth which felt quite short geared,so later i changed to a rolon chain 15 front and 42 rear.the rear one having a 6 whole mounting area where the front one is having 2.
now removed the chain guards or covers as it was a constant irritation and source of weird sounds .

i want to change the chain to a sealed o ring chain systems.i enqiired in kolkatta probiking service and they said the avengers coupling is needed to be fitted to place the avengers chain system.

any help in this regards will be of great help.
ps. i do a lot of highway rides so top end speed matters.

You can fit an O-ring chain to your pulsar so long as the chain pitch (distance between the two consecutive pins of the chain) matches the pitch of the sprockets. You have two ways of doing this:
      - find a chain that matches the sprockets you want or have
      - find sprockets to match the chain you want to fit

Lower powered bikes (most 150s) have a 428 pitch chain whereas higher powered bikes (200s and above) have 520 pitch chains. The 520 is stronger but heavier.

Most O-ring chains are of the rivet type instead of the clip master link type. The rivet type needs a special chain breaking/riveting tool or an angle grinder and centre punch to fit them. But I believe a clip-type O-ring master link is also availble.

My suggestion is to try the chain from a current P180 or above, an FZ (428 type) or Apache (don't know the type) for pitch and length. Excess length can be adjusted by removing links.

Keep in mind that O-ring chains cause a greater power loss due to the friction between plates and O-rings. They too need lubrication but not as much as non-O-ring chains. The best lubricant is usually the spray type since it sticks well and does not attract dust and sand like oil.

The Pulsar 200's chain sproket assembly is a direct Fit. A member Koolsun216 has done this mod on his first gen pulsar classic so its very much possible on the newer gens.

There is a slight difference in the wheelbases of the Pulsar 200 and the 180. Won't this have an impact on the length of the chain?

My bad. I forgot to add that he had changed the entire swingarm assy to the P200.

i thank you for your reply.
well mine is having 428 pitch chain and its already more then 10k kms old so i am looking for a full brand new set.
my main problem is i am having 6 mounting holes in the rear wheels coupling where all the new chains be it a avenger or p 200-220-180 are having 4 point coupling.this is the reason i have been told to change the rear coupling to avengers one and then change the chain to avengers sealed o ring one with cutting out the extra bit.

i was also told to do that infact the service eng told me to put the swing arm assembly from 220 with rear disk, the rear alloy wheel, rear fender, mudguard, chain all can be changed too.it will cost something around 12-15k.but i am really dont want to mess with the bikes swing arm as the mod can hamper its stability, more over the swingarm from the p 220-200 are mounted to their chasis which is diff from my p 180 ug 2 s chasis.
i just want to change the chain to sealed o ring.

Since you want to retain the sprockets and hub that you have, I suggest you find the chain of the correct pitch and of correct or excess length and have it fitted with modifications for length. This will be the cheapest option. Chains tend to be sold as kits with the sprockets so you may end up having to pay for that too.

My FZ has a 428 chain with riveted master link. It's surely too long for your bike so it'll need to be shortened. The FZ chain kit contains 14, 40 toothed sprockets and the chain. Same pitch for the R15 and 14, 42 toothed sprockets. The rear sprockets for both have 6 holes but I can't say if they'll fit the pulsar.

Got the P220 DTS-Fi chain sprocket kit for my P180UG3. The sprockets fit directly on my bike. They have 2 holes on the smaller sprocket and 4 holes on the rear. The teeth configuration is 14/37. The overall gearing has become a bit tall. Did 108kmph @ 9000RPM in just the 4th gear! As the swing arm on the 220 is longer than mine, I had to remove 3 links form the chain. Although the gearing is taller the bike still has got a lot of grunt for city use thanks to the CAMSHAFT mod.

please enlighten us by some pictures.as the ug3 has a 4 hole mount in front ,the sealed o ring chains are direct fit where older gen pulsars are diff in relation with rear hub and sprocket mount.
