  • Apache RTR Fi severe Knocking @3k-6k Rpm (done only 1600Kms)

    Hi everyone,
I bought an Apache RTR 160 Fi (My First Bike) in the month of May09 from Ramkay velachery in chennai.
Initially the bike was fine with awesome acceleration and smooth power delivery. Its because of this reason I bought the Fi version.
Then in first service I complained of front fork cone (Khut Khut)noise. They simply tightened it and said it's solved. But sadly it was still there.I was travelling out of station so could not give the bike back for repairs. Then came second service gave on Aug 31st Monday (done 1235Kms only).Problems reported were noise from front fork and engine knocking at around 3k-6k rpm.I was waiting for an update till Sep 04 Friday. Then called the SC and fired the S.Advisor.He told vehicle was ready and I can pick up anytime.Went on 05 saturday afternoon as took 1hr permission from work.Test rode my bike and found nothing has been done & only oil changed.Took a senior technician, the S.adv and another technician. They could not find the fork noise and misfiring/knocking issue. Then caught another technician told him to ride the bike along with me and he found the fork noise.Strangely the bike was not knocking.I was promised the bike on Monday 7th Sep.No one called me to collect the bike and on 8th sep I called them & they said fork spare parts not available. What the ?Part not available for a bike manufactured in tamilnadu. Frustrations .After many calls and a report to TVS company I got my bike on 10th Sep.Fork Noise fixed and parts replaced under warranty.First time since I started to work had to use public state transport (BUS) for commuting to office during the last 10days.
My 10 yr old Splendor never let me down, sunshine or rain.My Faith vanishing in RTR.

And now Knocking is back-Big time.
I always fill fuel from company operated bunks and petrol Topped till the brim. After service the bike was normal or so it seemed. Now as recently as yesterday I along with my took the bike & went out. Drive was barely 15kms in fair Sunday evening traffic and not too much.Speed was 45 -50 max. Then crawling in signal, the bike was not pulling much and knocking in 1st gear itself. Then as I was taking a U -turn(on coming traffic) the bike stalled.Tried to Self start immediately but in vain.Switched on indicator and pushed to side.and tried again ,it started.Engine was very hot and started continuing the ride .It was Knocking all the way, especially around 3k to 7k rpm.No power.Felt like I was riding a kaput 50cc bike.Bike's done only 1600kms.

Today Morning when engine was cold it's normal again.
My problem is if I tell the SC guys, they are never going to believe my words or a test ride for a few Km's.They'll just thrash the bike , rip it and say everything is fine. Does anybody have such experience with an Apache RTR Fi. This happens especially when the engine gets hot or riding with pillion(combined weight around 135kgs).Riding conditions are 15mins in heavy traffic (rider alone).

Can anyone please Guide, Help, Suggest me as to what to do now.
I've gone a bit mad now I think.Bought the bike thru HP(Finance), So can't sell it too before 6 months.I am feeling totally lost now.

    Eagerly anticipating replies
    Regards,
    Samuel

Thanks Puneet.I've just mailed to the service support in TVS.Expecting a reply from them.Hope they fix these issues this time once for all.
I'm also suspecting Injectors and also the fuel pump. The petrol tank actually gets warm to touch even with full tank fuel after few km's ride.
        Will keep you updated.
        Thanks & Regards,
        Sam

my friend is facing the same with the 180...take care that they dont put one more gasket for stopping that noise.it will reduce ur compression.

My buddy too bought an RTRfi and had knocking issues. The ECU was re-set /replaced as it belonged to an older batch but the problem sustained.
The engine knock was clearly heard. After repeated complaints, the SVC suggested higher octane fuel to overcome the knocking and bingo ! It stopped and it revs cleanly throughout the rev-range.
Diagnose the ECU, check the injectors and air filter, but whatever happens - never lose the faith !

@samuel : Fight TVS svc (scare them with legal action, write a lengthy unhappy e-mail to TVS customer svc, shout at manager, dealer etc, etc) and get it rectified and then immediately trade it off to some proven bikes like Unicorn/GSR/Xtreme/Stunner. All the very best.

Thank you everyone for your kind concern.
I've already fired a mail to TVS regarding the issue yesterday.I'm waiting for a reply from them.
dj_666- I am suspecting the fuel Injector and pump.
I tank up only in a reputed company bunk.1st time tanked up with Xtra premium , now using Speed. But I feel no difference.
I've not lost faith completely.I still love my bike.Just one blip of the throttle gets everyone attention and gives out a War Cry that it still means business.Hope it doesn't make me cry.
vipin_s - Your points taken buddy.Thank you. Actually I planned to go for Unicorn but the dealer said it'll take 3 months for delivery and was pushing the Stunner a lot at that time.Though I liked stunner I didn't go for it just because it was a bit tall for my Mom to climb on it.But she liked me riding it.And FZ was also rejected by me because of rear seat comfort.
Trust me the Stunner is one amazing machine for city ride.If only it had come with the Unicorn engine, half the 150cc bikes sold would have been it, and thats until the FZ was launched.
I bought my bike through hire purchase(HP) so can't sell it before 6 months. But the thoughts of selling it sometimes makes me very sad.My first bike I bought with my own money is giving me problems this soon.
"We have to have faith in our weakest times"

Anyway I'm hoping for the best.I'll keep you all updated.
                Thanks once again,
                Regards,
                Sam

                    Thanks Zayn,
I'll check the plugs tonight.I have washed my bike a few times after rains but I also have strictly followed the manual.Infact I've just cleaned the wheels, the engine guard and mud guard.
But I don't think I had problems after washing.Infact after the 1st service was done I felt the power to have actually gone down.
And yes the knocking sound came after the 1st service. And after 2nd service it's become worse.
Anyways I'll try your remedy tonight & I'll keep you updated.

                    Regards,
                    Sam

                      Update

                      Hi all,
I got a call from TVS day before yesterday(08th Oct) evening and I again explained the problems I'm facing.Since I was in office I just couldn't bombard the guy on the other side. The TVS person listened patiently and requested me to take the bike to another main dealership(Ramkay Adyar, chennai).
He also referred me to a Service advisor there and assured me that the problems will be surely rectified this time.I also told him that this is the fourth time I'm complaining of this issue and If it's not solved this time ,next time I'll return the bike back to the dealership and I'll have to take the matter differently.

I've given the bike to Ramkay Adyar on the same day and the SA has promised me to sort out all the issues and return the bike on 10th oct-Saturday Evening(Today).
                      Problems reported
1.Severe Engine Knocking @ 3-6.5K rpm(Engine warm to Moderately Hot condition itself).
                      2.Gear Shift hard (False neutrals)
                      3.Poor pickup
So I'm just waiting.I won't give them any feedback now.I'll ride it for 3-4days and then only I'll reciprocate.

                      I'll keep you all updated.
                      Thanks & regards,
                      Sam

I somehow feel that u are running on a very lean mixture. Also, get the Spark Plugs, Fuel Filter and Fuel Pump checked. These can be the culprits.

                          Hi I am Remortr

Hi SAMUEL-Fi,i heared u r problem that u r fi is severe Knocking @3k-6k Rpm
my last rtr have's the same problem like u r one.but now i am having Fi now. its a Simple problem dont feel for it.i have one doubt if ur bike is normal at cold condition(early morning)? if its normal at cold condition(early morning) means, its happening due to over heat. u have to check and correct the ignition timing.r u using good fuel, any additive?check that.Because the bad fuel forms carbon deposit on the head the heavy carbon deposit makes the valve to hit on the piston check that and decarbonize it if necessary.dont use extra gasket it will reduce the compression.check the tapped clearance.rep me if u r problem solve or not. see the pic .

UPDATE: 1868 Kms now.Problem still not solved.

                            Hi remortr (Remo-RTR) ,
Thanks for the detailed reply for my query.I'm sorry I couldn't update the thread as I was out of town during diwali.
I got my bike back but the problem is still there. The SC guys have checked the ECU, Spark plug, fuel pump and and finally concluded that it's the problem with Fuel quality. Now my question is whether if the Fuel quality is bad will it knock only when the engine gets warmed up or will it knock right from the beginning when the engine is cold? Moreover I get knocking within 4 kms of riding(& little crawling) in traffic in the morning. The first 2-3 kms it's fine.
And everyday morning I use only Kick start and warm up for @least 1min.

Btw I never got a proper reply from the SC guys and they were damn sure the Petrol quality was the issue.I had Half tank petrol then, so couldn't take out 7-8 litres of fuel and check then & there. If it's carburettor then we could have fixed a beaker and checked but in Fi it's not possible.

These issues apart, the petrol I usually fill is from a Reputed Bunk in T.nagar(Bpcl-Speed) and another one is in Saidapet(IOC-Xtra Premium).
And I don't use any additional fuel additives. My splendor, my friends pulsar150, a Dio all runs well with petrol from these bunks, only my Fi is struggling.
Fuel gauge has started to blink now and this weekend I'm planning to fill up my bike with 5-6 litres of Shell Unleaded( Company operated) to check. If the problem still persists I don't know what else to do. I told the SC to check timing but these lazy bones are reluctant to open the head, and they are saying the originality will be spoiled.

The person from TVS never responded after I gave my bike for repairing.Didn't even cared to call up to know the status, but since it was festival season I let go of him.

But other than this issue, the bike is flying when I ride it alone. With pillion it doesn't pull as strongly. Fuel efficiency has been around 50-54 (Full Tank-Full Tank method) and with revs mostly below 4.5k rpm with rare occasional burst to 7-8k rpm in 2nd & 3rd gear.Kms covered as on date is 1868.

And once again thanks Remo for the pictures, I'll keep in mind the Valve lapping issue, and thanks everyone for sparing your time for reading thru.

                            God Bless
                            Regards,
                            Sam
